Really good solid hard science fiction. Well worth the purchase.

I'm currently reading this book, however I'm also preoccupied by classes and work, so I am not making much headway at the moment. Also, I'm finding the narrative structure somewhat difficult to get through. Still interested enough to keep going--the author has an interesting premise and a good imagination, however I wouldn't describe the book as a "fast read."

I gave up on trying to finish reading this. Make no mistake, it is a very well-written book - filled with richly detailed descriptions of a very complex, multi-layered and highly plausible imaginary world. However, I find that the pace of the story suffers as a result. Also, due to the complexity of the plot, it is best to finish the book in a single session. Otherwise, you might wind up in the same situation as I: giving up reading it because I couldn't remember what went on before!

An excellent start to the series (even if the ending got a little weak).

I liked most of it. The solution to the space travel conundrum is actually quite interesting, and sets the scene for the entire novel. But the ultimate conflict, which is cleverly snuck up on the reader, was not as interesting as some of the 'lesser' conflicts. Oh, well.

Started off slowly but really picked up around page 150. After that it was very good.

Interesting mix of cyber punk and space opera, with special kudos to the attempt to revive the idea that the aliens to come will be anything but like us. Add to this the imaginative brands of future humanity that Reynolds has cooked up, in sync with the current European paranoia of genetic engineering. On the other hand, he seems to highlight that brand of European SF inflected by a certain over the top desire to best the darkest and weird out the weirdest. The story suffers at times because of this effete noire escapades. Reynolds finds his escape from the deadly embrace of his own imagination in that old trick of all out of breadth writers: the reader is all of a sudden thrown into confessional, first person narratives that summarize what a convoluted, in-world story line forgot or never got a chance to tell us.

More space than revelation. Didn't like the characters and had trouble following the plot, almost 600 pages of time waster.
