In 1977, best friends Lucy Small, a seventh grader from Wilmington, Delaware, who is five feet ten inches tall, and Jake Little, a dwarf, try unsuccessfully to go unnoticed during their first year of Junior high school.

  • Lucy Small: the narrator of the book. She was somehow taller than any other girls in school. her best friend was Jake, she was really tall and Jake was a "dwarf". Her dad went away to "find himself". She and her mom spend the day together.
  • Jake Little: Jake was Lucy's best friend. He was a "dwarf". His dad went away and married someone else; so his mom went out dating with Frank. Jake didn't like Frank, because he was afraid that Frank would replace his dad. Jake argued with his mom a lot about that.
  • Gary Geary: Gary was Lucy's and Jake's new best friend at Caesar Rodney Junior High. His family had a lot of problems. His dad was a alcoholic, his mom drunk and smoked everyday. He had three brothers, one dead, one went to the Air Force, and one in jail; so he was the only one made income for his family by mechanic. He got hold back because of failing classes and didn't go to school much. Lucy and Jake tried to help him out.
  • Mr. Otis: He was the grave-digger. Lucy and Jake watched him dig holes, but really afraid of him. But deep down inside, he was more than just a grave-digger.
  • Cheryl Egby: She was Lucy friend, wasn't really nice. She was the kind of kid that has the words "born to win" stamped across her forehead.
  • Billy Stratton: captain of the basketball team of Caesar Rodney Junior High. He coached Lucy played basketball.
  • Kwame Thompson: He was Lucy's new friend. He liked to sew and cook.
