When I ordered Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson from Amazon, I didn't look into the book too much. I had liked Snow Crash a lot, needed something to read, and heard some vague positive words about the book that I really didn't much pay attention to. So I added Cryptonomicon to my order that included Gibson's Mona Lisa Overdrive and the most recent Star Trek: Next Generation Companion. I really enjoyed this book, but it took two sittings to get through the first one hundred pages. Neal is able to simplify some beginning cryptology using real world metaphors, and that was really cool. Worth the challenge of getting through the first portion of the book.

    It's not all *that* long. And it beats the hell outa "Infinite Jest" or Douglas Hofstadter as far as time investment vs. entertainment. It is a bit "geek fiction."
