“A very good apocalyptic novel, but with some rough edges - perhaps Baxter was still perfecting his wares at that point. Some of the action is repetitive despite the author's best attempts to liven up the prose, and the attention to minutae partial and unsatisfactory. If you go out of your way to describe the differences between British and American culture, then you can't afford to miss out on some. Of course, the grand cosmic vision that would come to mark Baxter as a hard SF writer doesn't have too many rough edges - each new catastrophic occurrence moves throws up more avenues for outrageous speculation - exactly what hard SF fans want. Definitely worth a read.”

This is the third in three book set, Voyage,Titan and Moonseed. There is no need to read them in order. He also has a four, well, five book sequence known as the Xeelee sequence. This volume makes a nice prequel...”

True to his scientific style, Baxter explores the idea that there is perhaps more to the moon than NASA knows and that abandoning our olivine-rich satellite will cost humanity more than just a chance for further space exploration. The premise revolves around 2 plot lines: 1) a rock sample from our trip to the moon in the 60's gets unleashed in the environment with disasterous results and concurrently 2) one of our planets explodes and is traveling on a collision course with the earth with surprising effects. If you like relatable science fiction that makes you think even after finishing the book, this is the one for you.”
