the book is sooo much better! i found that lots of physical descriptions differ between the book and movie. the plot was changed a lot to accommodate the movie. if it followed the book more closely it would have been much longer. i only read the book once and i'm not a hardcore fan but i could still find lots of changes. as long as you enjoy them as seperate entities, they're both really great. i'd read the book though because it's a really fun read! :D
Some of the key things in the book are compleatly changed for the movie. It was a good movie but I like the book better.
THE MOVIE WAS HORRIBLE! The book was amazing. It is really sad too, because the book is so well written and Paolini wrote the world and its characters with such great detail that the movie could have been made an epic to the scale of LOTR. Alas, they really screwed it up.
Have not seen the movie, but the book is great - the whole trilogy will be wonderful - amazing talent for a young man who began writing in his early teens, self-published and then found a "real publisher". Met him in NYC - had the longest line for autographs of any writer at the national Book Expo conference in 2005 - terrific writing, for all ages!
I didn't actually think the writing was fantastic... the prologue definitely, I think that's especially weak. And many people on other sites that I frequent say how his ideas seem very similar to other fantasy plot lines; some that have been mentioned are McCaffrey's Pern series, Stars Wars, Lord of the Ring etc. It is an OK series, I guess, I'll read the final book just to see what happens, but I'm not particularly blown away by them. I think if he hadn't been published with the help of his parents first, then I think he would have had a hard time getting published with some other company; also, I think the fact that he was young played a part in his being published.
I didn't watch the film because, as I said I wasn't overly impressed by the books and I felt the film would be even worse (Joss Stone as Angela! No way! Angela was about the only character I actually liked!) so I steered clear of it.
This is all my two pennies worth anyway, I know there are plenty of people who have enjoyed the books. But for me, I've definitely read better books.
(And again with writing an essay! Hah. Sorry, I guess I'm too verbose for my own good!)
I haven't seen the movie yet, but from the previews I have seen for it, it looks like a real let down. The books are wonderful. I want to get the movie and compare the two. It may just be my opinion, but the characters in the movie didn't match up to how I pictured them as I read the book.
Sounds like I'm really going to have to read the book. Maybe it was good I watched the movie first because I really enjoyed it. If I had read the book then I probably would've been disapointed. I was aware how big the book was before I saw the movie so I was expecting the movie to be really long but it wasn't. So I know they had to cut out ALOT of stuff. Too bad. But I do have a hard time sitting through long movies so it worked for me. But it looks like I have a new book going on my reading list! Thanks all of you for your feedback.
If you want my opinion, the movie was awful when compared to the book. Whole scenes that really should have been in it were left out, and grand panoramics of the world should have been removed to make room for the good stuff. I loved the book, but can't say I care at all about the characters in the movie. With so many fantasy movies either out or being produced after the success of Lord of the Rings, I guess this was another attempt to make a LotR killer. But it failed in that miserably. Rent the movie if you can find the extended 2-disc edition, but read the book first. They're making "Eldest" next, and Paolini hasn't even finished the third book in the trilogy yet.
I actually liked the movie, but agree that it wasn't as great as it could have been, in the right hands it could have taken on LOTR status, but no such luck.
Oh, forgot about angela, that was a big letdown, she was so much fun in the book.
I don't know. My brother and I love the books and had really high expectations for the movie. We went together on opening night and were both so sorely disappointed. The entire plot is changed, significant details are left out, and Galbatorix (while I love John Malkovich) should not have had a part in the movie. The coolest part of the movie was Dursa. Or Durza. I forget. But, regardless, I just thought they did a terrible job.
the book is awesome, the movie was a good movie. Who ever wrote the script was obviously writing their own interpretation of the book. Go to the Authors website at alegeasia.com to see what he thinks of the movie.
I haven't read the book although I saw the movie with my kids (who have read the book). The eldest (age 18) was upset that the movie did not do the book justice, the youngest (age 12) was ecstatic with the on screen adaptation. Personally, I didn't like the movie but I'm willing to give the book a chance.
I put it on my reading list. Unfortunatly I have ALOT of books on there ahead of it. However, if I see it on sale or at the library I'll pick it up. Its probably on high demand at the library, so it may be a few months. Maybe when I finish the books I've recently picked up I'll put it on hold. It sounds like a series I really need to read.
the book is much better! a lot of things in the book are changed in the movie. i guess it was so the movie would be shorter but you should definitely read the book!
I probably would have liked the movie if I hadn't read the book first. Like someone said before, some huge sections of the book were omitted and the characters didn't look or act like I imagined from the book.
I decided to see the movie before reading the book and even before reading the book, I didn't think the movie was very good. Although the book can get a bit long and drawn out, it is still much better than the movie. I think the only thing the movie and book have in common is the concept. The details are almost all different though. For example, Durza dies in both the movie and book but how is completely different.
To me the movie could never even compare to the book. How could it possible touch what my imagination dreamt up? While I did enjoy the movie, it was nothing like reading it. There are so many more layers to the story that were not even touched upon in the movie. Also the history of what is happening and the different sides of the story never get fully realized in the movie. I think that Eldest will be even more difficult to capture in movie form.
its good you han't read the book, because I read the book and I HATED the movie. Sure it sort of followed the story a little bit but it changed and skipped too much.
Some of the charicters and places in the book wern't even mentioned! The book was much better. ( It did leave out some important things.)
I really enjoyed the book. I read it because my 8 year old son did and couldn't stop talking about it. I was so impressed I had my 9 year old daughter read it, who is not a big fan of the fantasy genre, and she loved it too. We were all so excited to watch the movie together and what a let down it was. I was so disapointed that I didn't even finish watching the movie. Now I'm taking a crack at Eldest but I keep getting distracted by other books.
i have to chime in because i feel so strongly that the movie was a terrible adaptation of the book. this book and Eldest are really great. i definitely recommend reading them.
I like the book, it's not particularly original or special, but it's a good, light read and I've read it a few times.
The movie was okay. I like Brom, but I felt like the other characters weren't developed very well. Ajihad showed up toward the end of the movie, then he died shortly after his introduction. There weren't any dwarves, either, which I thought was lame.
I didn't expect it to be a LotR-epic-type movie, because the book doesn't reach that scale, even though it tries, but I did expect a lot more than what I saw. I was really disappointed.
So yeah, like most other people have said, read the book.
Well you all have made me very anxious to read the book so I'm moving it up my list. I've been watching for it at second hand, but haven't seen it. I do know its 6.99 at Barnes and Noble. I did just buy a stack of books (second hand) all of which I'm anxious to read. But I have to see what all the fuss is about with this book and I'm sure I'll enjoy it as much as you all say. So thank you all for your opinions!
No, it was not really like the book. I LOVE the book, but I was disappointed in the movie. If you saw the movie first, I think you'd love the book. I'm so impressed that the author was 15(the same age as my students) and could write so creatively and brilliantly.
Honestly.
It was a cute good movie for a movie - If you try not to compare it to the book.
But if you do compare it, maybe you'll be as dissapointed as I was when I saw the movie.
They changed so many things around, it was ridiculous.
Im surprised Chris Paolini let the movie even come out with the way they did it.
The book was way to condensing. So much more happened that missed the movie. I suggest the book over the movie for sure. I read this book after my teen daughter read it. It gave us something to talk about. Then we made sure we went to the movie together. It was nice to share it with her. She also thinks the book is way better.
I was sooo angry with the movie!!! The plot was like, way off and that doesnt bother me at all, but all the little details, like hair color and other small things that really killed me! I spent the whole movie pointing out everything that was wrong!!!!
There are massive holes in the movie and inportant parts that were not included. The movie was done well but as for the storyline they need so much more!
I only managed to watch the first twenty minutes or so of the film before giving up.
THE BOOK IS BETTER THEN THE MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I do not think the book was close to the movie. The book was much better than the movie. The movie left out events and conversations between characters that helped the story make sense. The movie left out villages.
My boyfriend absolutely hated the movie and loved the book. I enjoyed the book, though not enough to read the sequal yet.
The book is much better than the movie. There were characters I thought were important to the story that were cut out the the movie - namely the Dwarves. Read the book and the sequel. I think books are always better than any movie made of them.
Exactly, HoppyFrood! I completely agree w/ you. His book is a compilation of ofther stories' plots, & not as well written either. If he wasn't so young, this book would not have seen the light of day. (duck head as rotten tomatoes are thrown)
Ah, thanks, Alicia! I was starting to think I was the only one! We shall avoid the tomatoes together, then! :-D
if you loved the movie you would really love the book because its so much better
the book is absolutely awesome but since i read the book first i have to disagree with you because the movie added in and left out a heap of stuff
Not really. Some of the characters in the movie differed completely from those described in the book. Key points were either removed or altered and much of the story was condensed.
Book was better, movie was lacking in content.
Was the book close to the movie?
I haven't read this book but I did watch the movie, so those of you who have read the book and watched the movie, was it close? I know movies leave out a lot of details, but were there some important ones missing? What they did show was it accurate with the book? Very curious because I LOVED the movie! When I get a chance I'll have to read the book. But until I can what is your opinion?
This book was an amazing accomplishment , especially coming from a boy of 17, it even surpasses some books written by authors with privious experience. Although he borrowed from Tolkien , he made the idea his own throught the book . I like the fact that it isnt a traditional fanstay story and that Paolini not only thought up his own language he also set up a unique form of magic
this book kept me hooked till the end and about half an hour after it finished
This is a great book. I love dragons and all the elves and dwarves.
i liked the book a lot..... especially after reading harry potter, it kind of felt different. the magic, the spells and the way the magic was used was really different from harry potter.....
I love the dragon - human partnership. I have read two other series based on this relationship (can not remember the names) but this one was great. The story line really kept you going.
Can't say that it's my favorite book... it passes as good, overall. Although, the fact that the author is quite young should make up for its otherwise fair result. And, yes, the movie was just terrible.
this book is like the best and most fascinating book that i've read of a dragon and a boy. boring at times, then all of a sudden back 2 square one, that is back 2 interesting! i loved it!
i am iin the middle of this wonderful book...i think this has been written with LOTS of passion and every word links to the next...so thats why i really love it :)
monica, do u really care wht the critics have to say about the book? i mean, if u enjoyed reading it as much as i'm sure u did, then it shouldn't really matter wht his influences are. unless of course u look at it as a personal affront to the great J.R.R.T that an amateur's first book resembles his own. i'm sure Paolini meant it as a tribute to the great man himself. and if not, can u blame him.....most modern fantasy lit is based on LOTR. i mean who else could create something as grand as Middle Earth and its complex cast of characters?
amazing book, cant wait for the 3r book to release.
i have both the books PDF if any one wants.

well i has just started reading novels when my friend gave me eragon & asked me to read it as she has loved it . i also found it really fascinating & engaging sort of book & loved it. i have also the second part the eldest &found it as intresting as the first one & eagerly awiting for the last of this triology.

Lighter than the usual fantasy books I'm used to, but enjoyable nonetheless. Especially considering the author is just a young boy. Still waiting for book 3.

We listened to this book on CD. It is not a book I would have picked out to read, but my son insisted. We were swept away last winter as we listened to book 1 and book 2. We are anxiously waiting for book 3. The movie is horrible--no surprise. it is a fun book.
Yeah, when i started this book, i didn';t know it was a trilogy. Can't wait for the 3rd book to come out. I saw the movie first, loved it so much i went out to buy the book, then ended up liking the books more than the movie. Did you know that after the movie came out, the book was totally sold out in the market? After 6 months of waiting, i gave up and decided to borrow from a friend.... shucks! i should have waited until .. what?..September 2008? And i hope it is a trilogy and not another cliffhanger....
Just to let everyone know this is no longer a trilogy. It will now be 4 books. I just read a news release on this a couple days ago. Book 3 it's looking like late 2008 for it's release. Then who knows for book 4.
Well, that's really sad. It was known to become a trilogy (possibly like Lord of The Rings) and now it's all just shattered.
its a very interestin'buk....a new idea of fantasy word.....its a splendid buk
this is definetly one if my most favorite books ever.i just love anythin at all to do with dragons,so...i seriously loved it.
I can't even put into words how amazing this book is all I can say is WOW!!!! to the masterful storytelling worldweaving and suspense building and brvo Christopher Poualini for making this masterful work of literature

I read the press release on the official site for the books. I'll post the link for anyone who is interested, but in order to read the press release, you need adobe reader.

The link doesn't work from here though, so you'll have to copy and paste it into a new window.
At the risk of everyone hating me for saying it:
I honestly can't figure why people like this book. It's terrible. Disgustingly terrible. Maybe I'm just too cynical, but this seems like one of the most blatantly plagiarized stories I've ever read.
Overall poor-quality writing (yeah, I know it's his first book. So?), plus a couple parts are copied word-for-word from Ursula K. LeGuin, and the plot is a poorly-veiled resetting of Star Wars: A New Hope.
I got about halfway through before I quit, out of disgust over the poor writing and because I already knew everything that was going to happen. Later on, I figured I might as well ask someone who *had* read the whole thing to make sure that I hadn't been wrong, but guess what?
I was right. The second half was just like the first: A New Hope.
If anyone wants to contest this, I have comparative outlines of the two. The plots are almost perfectly identical.
As for "a detailed world," please. he's got vague overall world descriptions and minute details, but very little on the spectrum in between.
Many others also said they felt the way you do. But you are forgetting, he was 15 when he wrote this as well.
Yes! Finally! I share all of your views. This is a poorly written, predictable book -- if it hadn't been for his parents publishing company this book probably wouldn't have been published. The prologue is especially weak, even from the very first lines. I'm not disparaging the thing in it's entirety, there aren't many young people who could have written a novel (but at the same time there are others of similar age with more talent who haven't had the chance to be published) and he has some interesting ideas...but it's obviously a young person's stab at their first proper fantasy story and as such pulls together all the usual tropes and cliches -- elves, dwarves, they've all been done before and in more interesting ways.
Mayhap he'll improve with the series, he is growing older and this is no doubt giving him a lot of experience, but I just hope he won't be too lax, thinking that the next books are going to be published regardless and so doesn't attempt to tighten his writing and improve his ideas.
Wow...usually I'm much more scathing about this series...I must've calmed down a little since my last rant!
i have to disagree with you one that but at times it could be pradictable
at times
ps.my advise read second and third also great reads
The writing is a bit pedestrian, and if one must split hairs, yes it is a bit lacking in detail but I do think one has to allow for age. It depends on what you are expecting from the book. You cant expect the same degree of literary merit from every writer in the genre (especially 15 year old ones). If you get over all these things (AND of course yourself), you would recognize that this IS a very credit-worthy first attempt at the extremely difficult art of story telling.
My sis-in-law works at a walden books, and they had a sign up sheet to reserve the third book. Just thought I'd give you a heads up to look for a sign up sheet in your book store soon.
the book is good .... so is the movie!! read the book and see the movie... you'll love it when you feel you inner self is also a warrior against the odds inside and out :)
It took me a while to get into the book. but I enjoyed it in the end, however, not sure where the 2nd book will lead us so I will wait. Did not see the film. Evelyn S
Me 2. Infact I ignored this book for about 6 months in which Eragon & eldest gathered dust at my table. Then one day, getting very bored I opened it and as soon as I did I was enchanted. I just couldn't put down the book after that.
This bookie I just love so much. Did you all know that the writer was only 15 when he started writing it? Got finished wid it at 17. I find that very kool, this boy has a lot of imagination I would say. I just can't wait for his 3rd bookie to come out *im dying here* lol
I agreed with you guys. This book is great. I would rather not to give any comments on the movie.
Ummmmmm can anyone please tell me the story please?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
I'd suggest reading it XD it's quite an elaborate story.
As a breakdown of the novel, it has a few similarities to LotR and the Belgariad, as there's a special 'thing' that the hero has to keep from the villain and master for his own use...but it has dragons in it, making it infinitely cooler.
I haven't read it for a yar or so, so I can't remember much, but it's well worth reading.
It is a GREAT book!!!!! tremendous writing.. I am very eager for d third book...
I love this book but hated the movie. I hate it when they don't do it justice and screw the movies up!
Good book, far better than the movie which doesn't do the book justice at all.
Hello, people what is wrong wid you Eldest is just as good as Eragon. And the thing between Eragon and Saphira is fine. Christopher Paolini did a fantastic job on both these bookies. Can't wait for the third one.
how do u think that the king is goin to die???
who will saphira mate finally????
who wiil ride the third dragon???????
any guesses??????
You don't really want to know, do you? Book 2, Eldest, is out and you learn a lot there. Also the depiction of the Elven world is 2nd best I've ever read.
I actually liked Eragon better, but thats just me. And overall, they're both GREAT! When did they say the 3rd book was coming out?
the third book is not out until dec 2008. there are evn rumours that paolini might continue the story in a 4th book..............
The third book is schedled to release on Sep 23, 2008 and yes there will be a Book 4 fo rthis series. This is a authentic news from Paolini himself from the books website.

Love the book but I was really disapointed in the movie, it waz nothin like the book, oh well if your going to waste a few million dollars it might as well be on a terrible movie, right?
I do luv this bookie. But I was really disappointed in the movie. I mean they got everything wrong, the hair colors to the way they are suppose to look and they ruined Saphire. She just didn't grow up that fast.
Derivative story with lifeless narration and limp characters. OK to read if you haven't read any other fantasy, otherwise you'll find yourself leaping light years ahead of the plot.
had a hard time with this book, but read it to the end anyway, hoping it would redeem itself. It didn't. It's derivative, clumsily written and loooong.
Stop complain you people the kid did a fanatasic job at this bookie. And the dragon looks fine on the cover of the bookie
please respect others' opinions. not everyone HAS TO LIKE the book.
dude whats wrong with stephanie meyer? she writes way better books than stupid eragon or eldest
dude whats wrong with stephanie meyer? she writes way better books than stupid eragon or eldest
sorry, but i agree with x ray a. People who did not read the book might find it ok, but for those who did read it, its a big disappointment.
The books are amazing...and the movie was just horrible. I can't wait for the third book "Brisingr" to come out. In Sept. 2008!!!
the characters and story line was amazing. a great read for adult and child alike.
That's cool it is a good book stick with it and by the end you'll be begging for Eldest, the second book in the series!Im waiting for the third...
Have read only first book so far. maybe when current books are read I will get it fromn the LIBRARY, Book 2 I mean, Evelen S
Ooops..too eager to know..scrolled down the page and i got my answer. LOL
Thanks a bunch.

A good read for all ages especially the first on Eragon. My son at 13 loved both books and cant wait for the third.
the beginning of eragon is ok it take a while to really get into the book and what the problem is.. i really didn't have fun in the beginning but over all the book gotta 4 out of 5 out of me.
nice story of a young boy who turns into rider,, with the vivid forests urgals, broth and jeode and saphira ofcourse..
I personally loved this book. At first looking at the cover I did not buy it thinking someone wrote a story and misspelled dragon. Then it was recommended buy the bookstore owner that I frequent when Eldest came out. I was not disappointed by either book and recommended it to every one I knew that read. they in turn asked when the third installment was coming. So there are many who like the book.
he the movie is good too. but then again i haven't read the book yet.
my bad it was supose to say "hey the movie is good too. but then again i haven't read the book yet" lol
True...movie adaptations of books rarely translate well on screen. And only selected one really do it justice. Understandably, that it's a different medium altogether but major revisions because of the visual element doesn't always complement the original source material.
The Eragon movie was an utter failure, though. Look at the LotR/HP/Narnia movies. They made changes too, because it was necessary. But they never lost the essence of the book, and Eragon really really did.
I agree. This movie had the potential to be fantastic, had they not strayed so far from the book. And Eragon (the book) is so well thought out that it wouldn't have been hard to follow. My brother and I looked forward to this film and were both grossly disappointed. We left the theatre disgusted.
Finally, I have some people that concure with me. I didn't like this movie either. I for one hated this movie. I was so disappointed in the way they set it all up and had nothing that happened in the book happen in the movie...grrr! I love the book so much. Fortunately I didn't watch tis movie in theaters, I was going to but didn't get to and now I for one and very glad I didn't..
It was a really awesome movie. Just nothing like the book. I saw the movie b4 i read the book. My friends had happened to read the book and told me the movie and book had nothing in common. The movie is good, just not the book
i totally agree it was un-coolio and retarded! it didnt show some of the caracters and what was that dragon growing up seen? the dragon like morphed like one second it was a baby dragon and the next minute boom! it was an adult! what the heck?!
the book is great. its just a pity that the movie was too far removed from it... it detracted from the rich imagery of the text... though i liked rachel weiz as the voice of saphira -_-
The book is fantastic, but I didn't care for the movie. It left out too much. I like who they had for most of the characters, except Arya. She was supposed to be an elf! Where were her elf ears? I didn't see any. I wish they would have chosen a different person altogether. I don't like her very much. But I respect your opinion if you do =))
I have to agree with the majority on this one... This book was great and I really enjoyed it, the movie... that's a couple hours of my life I can NEVER get back. Disappointing is an understatement!
I enjoyed the book despite the fact that I felt the flow of writing to be a little bit awkward. I got used too it after a while though. It was cute how you could tell the author didn't know much about romance at the time he wrote it... He obviously wasn't writing from personal experience when trying to craft the whole relationship aspect to the books. hehe- of course he was VERY young when writing, which is an amazing feat and I can't wait to see how his literary style grows as he starts to have more real world experience.
I did enjoy it though, it was a fun and easy read, and it was easy to get swept up into the story.
Did anyone else realize that the plot is a lot like Star Wars? I don't know if it's just coincidence or if Christopher tried to do it.
When I was that age, I took in a lot of the books I was reading at the time and sort of formed my writing style from it. A lot of authors when trying to figure out their personal style will do this. He borrows a great deal of his literary style from Tolkein, however it's not executed very well, I could definitely see where his influences came from and that's been his primary criticism as an author.
As far as the Star Wars plot elements, I've heard that on more than one forum about this book. All I can really say to that is that this is a YA book, which happens to have gotten some widespread popularity for some reason I can't fathom... and that if it wasn't as popular I doubt anyone would really care. I'm sure the younger readers don't care. But if you old fogies want something original... stick with the classics like Lord of the Rings. I never read this book to be wowed or amazed. This book is like one of those movies that you went to see in the theater, and as you're walking out you're thinking to yourself. "I won't buy the DVD, but maybe I'll watch it again if I can see it on the airplane for free."
This book was given to me as a gift from someone who knows I love to read fantasy. I hesitated buying it because the author was so young but now that I have it, I will definitely read it. But I appreciate Sharp's comments. My expectations for the book will remain the same.
Ahhh please don't get me wrong- I DID enjoy the book, for the reasons I mentioned. It's one of those books to just enjoy, and not expect too much out of. It's a lovely fantasy story, and for a young author, very impressively crafted... but don't expect to come away from this book with very deep or profound thoughts. Just enjoy it as a light and fun read for a rainy day.
I'd also like to add that when I was his age, I wouldn't have been able to write a book even 1/10 as good! So- well, I think that alone is something to be respected.
interesting, but i think most kids these days have way more better fantasy novels for their imagination to help their writing to go wild ... does that make sense?
what i'm saying is this book has quite amazing (and sometimes predictable) plot twists but to me the storyline was just enough to get me hooks to it (that said, i actually started from the second book and bought the first to complete it)
i think that the movie didnt do the book any justice! i loved the actor, but the movie was lame!
i havent read the book yet, but i still think the movie was one of the worst ive ever seen. my brother, who has read the first few chapters, said that the movie is nothing like the book.
It isn't. The book is way better than the movie. In fact, all books are better than the movies.
Please ohh please don't let a bad movie ruin a perfectly good book for you. Forget the movie ever existed please! It was a travesty of a movie, and I'm very disappointed that it could turn off future readers of the series. That's why I made sure I read the book BEFORE seeing the movie. Movies are never as good... I can't think of one example.
The book was amazing, and the movie brought it down. It barely followed the storyline. It would have been a better movie if I didn't read the book.
I'm glad that many people consider the movie worthless. I had read the book about two years before the movie came out, and I loved the book, and when I saw the movie it was the most disappointing thing ever, as curt r says it barely followed the storyline, I can understand that they had to cut off some things to make it into a movie, but other very different thing is to completely change the plot. Anyway, I tell everyone not to watch the movie, but read the book, which I think is very good :)
i have seen the movie and it was ok. Will the book be better than the movie
??? thats what i've heard.
The book is SO much better than the movie. I read the book first, and while I enjoyed the movie, I thought it could have been a lot better. I've read Book 2, Eldest, and look forward to reading the upcoming Book 3, Brisnger.
The book is WAY better than the movie. If you read it you will find out.
The book was great! The movie was a very disappointing. I was told not to see the movie by other people who had read Eragon. I didn't think it would be that bad so I watched it. I guess I proved myself wrong. If you have read the book, please don't see the film. But if you do see it don't expect to see a high quality film.
I am now reading the book again to cleanse my memory :)
I like this book but I really do think that Eragon made a whole lot of mess-ups....it probably wouldn't have been too hard if he wasn't so foolhardy but then again there wouldn't be a story!!
Oddly, this series I enjoy so much more than Harry Potter. I bogged down after book 2 of HP. I'm looking forward to finishing this series.
I totally agree and I only read Eragon. I feel like there were some good parts, but so drawn out that it took forever to read one scene. If he would have had the same story line in half the pages, then it would have been good! He took too much excitement out with meaningless details!
you may think so because it has to do with actual strategy and talk about politics. Alot of people think its boring. bu i love it.
i know what u mean this book was a piece of shit what kind of dumb ass would like this book
Wasn't this a terrific book. I'm so excited about the new book coming out in September.
this series is great...I'm looking forward at the last installlment of the series.....
this is a great book. it was a story replete with adventures and characters you can easily love. you can read this over and over again.
i was amazed how then 15-year-old Paolini conceptualized this.
is this a recomended book by u all because i have only read about the first four chapters, should i continue
YES CONTINUE! THE NEXT 2 BOOKS IN THE SERIES ARE WONDERFUL! ELDEST IS MORE INTERESTING THAN THIS BOOK DUE TO MORE ACTION
yeah you should continue.. the book is a lot more better than the movie... The movie really sucks
yeah u shud but thats just me u need other people to say the say the same thing
This is one of the rare books that I never think of turning its pages the second time! Its plot and characters are so familiar that you have to say hello to them like old buddies! Paolini is fantastic since he was only 15 when writing it but the book truly reflects his age!!!!!!
THIS BOOK WAS BORING I DIDNT GET THE ENDING IT NEEDS MORE EXCITMENT! BUT OVER ALL IT WAS GOOD
howis this book boring its like over 500 or 600 pages? its packed full of adventure, battle and some romance. Read the back or the page inside to get a feel of what it wasabout
Definately NOT boring. Too bad that you didn't get the ending cause I did.
I started of really enjoying the first few chapters, and then it all just peetered out. I had like two chapters left to go and didn't even finish it. This is the first book in a while I haven't finished. I just found it boring. I was disapointed since it seems to be so popular. I really did want to like. The writing style was great, I just don't think I cared enough about Eragon or Saphira to push myself through it.
The main complaint I can see is that it's not very exciting throughout the middle of the book. I find that most fantasy/medeival warfare books are the same: long tedious buildup in the beginning or middle of the book with a large battle at the end. If you've read several books like this you know to wait for the excitement at the end, but if you haven't I can see how you could get bored.
You're right, but this book is set apart from all of the other fantasy books by his connection to his dragon, which can result in things that you don't understand, which is good in a book, because it keeps you tuned into the book to see if you can uncover the mystery.
I agree, it's too slow in the beginning.
Eldest, the second book, is a LOT better than this one! You should read that one too, if you haven't already :)
Eragon for me was an amazing book. There are many reasons why I liked this book so much. First, though this book does have similarities with other books such as Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, it is still very well-written and thorough. Second, Christopher Paolini's sense of humor. This book makes me laugh and that's something I love in a book. If there's no humor, books just drag on and on (with a few exceptions). And for this to have been written by a teenager is just ...amazing.
i loved this book! it was amazing .. even though i do not normally like fantasy books .. i found myself really really liking this book! i have now also read the following two books in the series and am anxiously waiting for the next book!
p.s. i also liked the humor, divya s :) it was funny!
What do you mean when you say "well-written"? See, you may like the book, love it even, and declare that it is the most amazing novel you've ever read. Yet in order to qualify as "well-written", Eragon would have to meet certain criteria - and clearly, it doesn't.
regina s should of been on of the characters. It would of been more interesting.
why does it seem like everyone think Eragon is a copy of other books? It's not, it's just an amazing book that followed the fantasy path like any other fantasy book. I personally think that there is nothing wrong with this book or it's series.
I think what offends people the most is that Paolini borrowed so heavily from good authors and then combined and executed their material in a less than spectacular fashion.
There's a considerable difference between archetypes and stereotypes, as well as between similar motifs and themes vs. xerox copy plagiarism.
Let me give you a synopsis, and you tell me where it comes from:
Heroic orphaned farm boy lives in the backwaters of an evil empire. One day, he stumbles upon an item that could change the fortune of the realm and end the tyranny; unfortunately, the heroine who delivered it there was caught by the emperor's henchmen and barely managed to hide it before she was taken into custody. The farm boy then consults and aged mentor-figure living in the vicinity, who turns out to be the last member of a bygone order of noble protectors, knights who used their unusual powers to help the needy. Unfortunately, they were betrayed by one of their own, and slaughtered by the rising Empire.
In the meantime, the minions have discovered where the item went, and torch the hero's farm, killing his relatives. He leaves the place, accompanied by the aged mentor, and is instructed in the ways of the Old Order. Eventually, they rescue the heroine from her prison, but are pursued by the minions of the Evil Empire, straight to the hideout of the rebel forces. There, a battle takes place, and our hero saves the day with the help of an unlikely ally, a somewhat rogue-ish character who's not exactly interested in joining the rebels.
Now, what story is that? It's STAR WARS.
Jane the Bane had it so right, and the movie makes it 10 times more obvious. The book is of course better than the movie, but it's still fairly pedestrian. I don't expect anyone to come up with something totally original, 'cause it's impossible, all I look for in a book is characters I like and a good flavor to the story. Eragon has an okay flavor but I didn't much care for any of the characters. And I don't mean that I expect to identify with them either, I don't identify with any character in any book I've read or movie I've seen. It's like the Robert Jordan books, at first I liked the characters but they got steadily more irritating as the series went on. I quit halfway through book 5. Gots to have a character I like. I think Paolini might turn into a great author someday, but he's not there yet. And so much the better. I look forward to the time when he's finished with all the dragon stuff and tries something else.
I personally didn't like the books at all.I didn't even read the seconed one.
this book is written by a teenager and i think its interesting for them! yap, if you read lord of the rings first and then switch to this book you will get bored! but believe me lord of the rings is heavy for kids to read.... bad or good many people read it already and still buying it.
i read lord of the rings. Loved the hobbit but hated the rest. they were far too drawn out i found no point to many many pages. Eragon is filled with plot nearly every page has an immediate meaning and another much deeper meaning. Its my favorite series.
i think this book is way better than lord of the rings and lord of the ring nmovel is pretty boring than the movie
Ugh....I did not particularly like this book at all! It was very disappointing. Being home schooled myself, I expected it to be...I don't know...something GOOD?? But I was wrong. This guy was completely unoriginal. Too many of his elements were taken directly from Narnia, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars, and it was REALLY obvious. Not to mention that the genre is way overdone. I don't know what he was trying to do, but it seems like he was a fan who was so inspired that he essentially copied the plots, etc. of his favorite novels/movies. (Speaking of movies, let us not forget the disaster the movie version of this book turned out to be! It felt like I was poking my eyes with glass shards the entire duration of THAT lump of garbage.)
I really cannot even figure out how I made it through the first book and even started the second. I must have had absolutely nothing else better to do or something. I remember it taking a long time, like it was really forced. I do NOT recommend this book to anybody except if you truly have nothing else better to do and a lot of time on your hands which you might otherwise spend twiddling your thumbs (which may render itself a more useful endeavor in the end, since you won't have your brain burned out afterwards).
I understand where you're coming from in regard to the feeling of unoriginality in this book, but if you think about it, no fantasy book nowadays doesn't borrow from some other author. Besides, how do you think they began writing in the first place? They were inspired. :)
If you want an author that comes up with truly unique ideas, try Brandon Sanderson. His Mistborn trilogy is amazing, and I'm only through the first book. The magic system is wholly unique.
I agree the movie was a disastor!
My husband liked it but that's only because he hasn't read the book.
As for the book yeah it did have a lot of traits coming from other books and authors but you had to get an idea from somewhere.
If you want something different and off the wall try the Myst trilogy. Rand and Robyn Miller with David Wingrove.
There are different.
For me though the first book was kinda hard to get into. It took me a little while to finish. I really liked the last two books.
I haven't finshed reading it yet, so I don't know how good it is. My friends really like this book, but I'd play it safe and borrow it. :)
No affence, but I think you will.I didn't like it that much. But hey, everyone has there own opinions.I guess you'll just have to read it to find out your opinion, and then write a review or something.lolz!=] The one book I absolutely loved was "Nightmare Acadamy, by Frank Peretti" I read it all in a day and a half.It was sooo good! I'm reading "Saint, by Ted Decker" right now. They have got to be my fav. authors!
NO this is a really good book and i couldn't stop reading it when i picked it up!!
why did arya steal the dragon egg from the king himself??????????????????????
because she was trying to protect it and to give it to the rightfull dragon rider who would not eventually become evil and take over the world.
Yep. Then Arya is to take it back and forth from the elves to the varden, but she is then captured and transports it to Eragon, where it hatches.I think the movie was horrible. to scary for my liking.
She was trying to get the egg to Brom in Carvahall actually, but her magic couldn't transport it that far so it ended up in the Spine where Eragon found it.
should i read this book or not?write on my page if i should or not please.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The movie was sooooooo stupid, O.K. If you didnt read the books. They did not go along with the books at all!!!
i am reading it now and i can say one of the best books i have read in a long time
Hey, did you like eragon? I thought it was interesting but it took a while to get into
wow.... i must be the ONLY one on the face of the planet that thought that the movie was actually GOOD. i didnt say great. i was reading it for 5 YEARS B4 I FINISHED THE DANG THING!!! im actually pretty fast, but i couldn't get into it so i put it off for about 2 years and said hey i want a book so i buried it up from my room and started reading it again. my sister STILL to this day makes fun of me for waiting so long.
I thought the movie was good too. I did like the book a bit better but the movie was still good.
I liked the movie too haha. To me the movie was slightly better than the book only because I found the book to (can't figure the word lol) to read. Like it was a good story but the way it was written was too dull.
A really great book, is the movie really that bad? Everyone says it is though so I wont be watching it.
You should watch it for yourself and decide what to think. It's a great movie when you think about it as only based on the book.
i have a friend and he told me, that the book eragon is not good but it is for me, it has a lot interesting details,
the movie and the book are totally differtents, still the book is much better
The book is pretty good. The movie could have been great but the one they did is way too short. It should have been as long as The Lord of the Rings's trilogy in order to worth it. And indeed the movie doesn't go along with the book.
I just finished this book and I did like it. I also like the movie. I know, I know it wasn't close to the book, both in storyline and detail, but as a stand alone movie, it was good. Family friendly and my sons really enjoyed. I do like the richer, more detailed story in the book and am eagerly starting Eldest to see where it goes.
hae. does anyone know when the 4th in the series is coming out?
interested in reading it.
No dates have been released yet. For news on it check out www.shurtugal.com
I really love this book! Its fresh and has its own twist to the story of dragons and riders!
Dude, this book was the absolute bomb when I first read it two years ago. I would find myself flipping through pages with my friends and telling them all the crap that happened to Brom. haha. Oh yeah, and I agree that the movie did suck, and I didn't really like the second book very much until the end. Yet still, this is a great book for any youth or adult to read!
The movie was horrable! it wasn't even close to the book! they should have just changed the name and no one would have ever known it was the same thing!
Wow! I was blown away by this book, I am sooo close to finishing the second books, but that one cannot compare to this. I really enjoyed this book plus I just love books that include magic. I hope Arya and Eragon can be a couple!
WOW! THIS WAS AN AMAZING BOOK IT WAS WELL WRITEN NOT TO MENTION THAT THE AUTHOR WAS THAT YOUNG AND TO WRITE SOMETHING THIS GOOD IS JUST MIND BLOWING AND LIKE RICHA S I TO HOPE THAT ARYA AND ERAGON CAN BE COME SOMETHING SPECIAL
OH IN MY POST I FOR GOT TO MENTION WHAT I THOUGHT OF THE MOVIE IF YOU ARE RELAING IT TO THE BOOK IT WAS A DISASTER BUT IF YOU ARE RELATING IT TO OTHER MOVIES IT WAS VERY GOOD ONE OF ITS DEFULTS WAS THAT ALL THE DETAIL IN HOW PEOPLE LOOK AND THERE PERSONALITES WAS NOT ON KEY AND I ALSO THOGHT THAT WHEN THEY TOOK OUT JEOD THAT THEY TOK A LOT OF DETAIL FROM THE MOVIE BECAUSE THAT IS ONE OF THE MOST INPORTANT PARTS IN THE BOOK IN MY OPION
This book is incredible! A great read for any age. Also, the age of the author mixed with the absolute attention paid to detail is mind-blowing! This book instantly became an all-time favorite for me!!! I've read the other two also (yes, they're favorites as well) and can't wait until the fourth one comes out!!! This one is a must read. As for the movie, I hated it when I watched it because I had just finished reading the book. As far as movies go, it was good, but as for being based on the book, it qualifies as one of the worst movies based on a book ever. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who might possibly be interested.
I'm not positive, but I was reading somewhere about book 4 potentially coming out in 2012. :( It's kind of a wait, but I suppose it should really be worth it then. Then movie - goodness gracious. It has great potential, but they were in such a rush for $$$ it wasn't developed. However, I REALLY would love to see a remake. Take the chronicles of narnia for ex. The original movies= suck. But the remakes are pretty neat. Maybe as soon as the copyrights are lifted for the 1st movie, companies will make a new and better one. :/
i absolutely loathed the firsat movie. completely ruined everything! i really do hope a new remake comes out...the first was terrible, ppl die for wrong reasons, leave for wrong reasons, and some ppl r just plain not there or r portrayed completely wrong! the things they changerd made it vital to have a second--now there stuck with a terible first and no other way to continue!
ot wud really stink if eragon and arya didn't get together! they wud b great for each other.....roran jus needs to give eragon a few tips...i'm sry but sometimes that boy can b so clueless...
I have just started this book and so far I like it, how good is it out of 10?
@ tatum k: that usually is the case with a movie after you've read the book. The movie is (almost) always less, because they leave out a lot of details that make the story or the environment. They just can film everything you can imagine... That's why I love reading better ;-) 1 exception is Stephen King's IT...
I absolutely cannot believe Paolini was only 15 when he started writing this! My idol!!
well what i heard is that he wrote it for fun and not to publish, but someone told him that he should so he tried it and made after a couple tries
I thought Murtagh was a far more interesting character than Eragon, would much rather have read a novel focused on him actually. Though it's a good thing CP decided to focus on Eragon, at least this would mean that Murtagh's character wouldn't be ruined so much!
What I found interesting in today’s reading was the library that Eragon described. The library must be huge if it had all of the dwarfs history and human writings too. It would be quite interesting to read the books. What made me mad in today’s reading was how rude the twins were to Eragon. I don’t understand why they hate him so much.
I had to force myself to read in the beginning since it started out really slow, but then it was just great. I was surprised since I had heard so many bad reviews from people I know, but they were wrong.
I thought I would never liked this book, but after I started I could not put it down. I will agree that the beginning was a little slow.
im sure somebody pointed this out already way back when.. but if not:
I cant help but draw comparisons between this plot and Star Wars. There are so many parallelisms between the two plots, its cute.
Also, reading Eragon made me feel like i was playing a video game.. the way Eragon grew and progressed in skill, and the way the action was written made me remember the numerous Role Playing Games i have played over the years.
This was a really good book. There are two books after it, Eldest and Brisingr. I love the way this book ends. Was anyone surprised with the ending?
I love the book it is so cool u should read it some times!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I actually enjoyed reading this. I'll admit that I first picked this book up to see how well it was written when I found out the age of the author. I actually ended up liking it very much, but I should say that when you compare the book to the movie, the book was definitely A WHOLE LOT BETTER, and the movie was ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE!!!
This book wasn't that bad. I liked the part how him and his dragon developed a special bond. It sucks that they try to kill him and the his dragon. This book is an example of good versus evil and good always triumphs over evil. I read the book in the 6th grade and read it again to see if it was still as good as it was back then and gladly to say nothings changed.
dylan nov 15 very interesting book great plot sort of hard to read lots of big words on pg 188
I found this book to be both well-written and well planned out. It coupled much of the coming-of-age emotion with some extraneous circumstances that, though they may not occur to anyone reading the book, I believe many can relate to. The author himself being a teenager when he wrote it, the book contains many of the emotions of a teenage male, a point of view not often seen on fantasy books.
A very well-written book. Paolini manages to make each book better as the inheritance series progresses. The only negative comment I have to say is the unnecessary elf, urgal, and dwarf languages. (they only make it a time-consuming hassle to flip to the back of the book EVERY time for a translation.)
now, if only he'd finish writing the last book already!
No duh! I have been pulling my hair out waiting for the fourth book to come out... i dont think i can last much longer
What's the fourth one going to be called? I want to read it.
GAH!!! I love Eragon and them a little too much, now that I think about it.
At the very beginning it is is a little dull but if you can get past that first chapter or so it really picks up.
This is such a great book! When is the 4th coming out?
It starts out really dull and slowly picks up pace. The attention to detail is good but the language can be weird at times. To me this series is a mix of 3-4 other series with striking similarities.
It starts out soo slowly! It took me months to get through the first couple chapters. But once it takes off, it's hard to put down. LOVE this book!
AAAAAh!!! cant wait fo the fourth one. The name hasnt been announced yet and even that drives me nuts! I loved these books but the movie was disappointing. None of the charachters looked right.
I agree! The first three are three of my favorite books ever, but the movie was terrible!
this is my best serious evvvver
read the first 3
& cant wait for the fourth book.....
it is totally awsome and i cant believe the 4rth book will be released in november 8 named"inheritence" and the cover as a green dragon....
its a-must-read!!!!!!!1
If "good" is a defined as a book with a linear plot filled with gaping holes that sounds like it was written by a kid, then yes, it's good. This book actually destroyed my faith in the future of children's literature.
This is a great book, and a great series. Chris Paolini is brilliant in his character development, author voice, and world-building. It's a must-read for fantasy lovers. It doesn't hurt that his favorite book as a child was the same as mine, "Jeremy Thatcher: Dragon Hatcher". :) I'm going crazy waiting for word of the last book, though. From what I understood, it was all originally going into the third book and it just got too long so he split it into two. Wouldn't that mean he had most of it written a long time ago? No idea why there's such a delay, but hopefully there will be word soon. :)
This indeed is a great fantasy series. The fourth book will be called 'Inheritence' and will be published on 8th November '11.
It's over time and through the growth of both Saphira's and Eragon's strength in energy.
I find the writing in this book a little bit childish... (Unlike the 2nd and 3rd books)
You have to remember that Paolini was a teenager when he wrote this book. Given that I think he did very well for his for effort.
JMO
I enjoyed this book alot. It was exciting and I didn't want to set the book down. I started the second one, and I thought it was boring so I stopped. I havn't re started it yet, but in that time I started reading this book again. I liked it alot.
I read some of it, and I really like it. I'm into the midevil day stuff. :P
Hi!!!!! Stargazer!!!!!
Peeps take my suggestion! READ DA BOOK!!
Um.. have any more questions peeps?
Is the next book any good?
What about the 3rd book?
I love this book! It is my all time favorite book in existance! I have read it a total of 19 times and it is still just as good as the first time! Anyone else read this book more than once, or am I the only one?
