I read about erikson's series on wikipedia, and it seemed to me that there is a lot of magic involved in the world, and the lack of it is what I like about Martin.

Thank you for the recommendation. Just to add something about Martin and your help, The Knight of Flowers is considered to be gay, these aren't some readers' thoughts, Martin said so and it's on his page, that he would have made Renly and TKoF gay if Renly hadn't died.

Can anyone recommend something very similar to this series? I tried going back to Salvatore, Pratchett, Gaiman and most other contemporary fantasy ( please don't recommend Tolkien or King, already read it), but I can't find anything that is as good as Martin.

I've read the first four books and of course loved them. A guy I work started reading them years ago and has been trying to get other people to read them. He was finally sucessful with me. We are both eagerly awaiting the fifth one this fall. Are you sure it comes out in September? I went to Martin's web site and couldn't see where it said a date other than sometime in the fall

My head is spinning... I can not believe what I'm reading!!!!! This novel is almosts too much and so I love it and hate it at the same time LOL. It doesn't usually take me so long to read a novel, but I find myself reading and re-reading the same parts just to get a better understanding of what's going on (and at times, to make sure I actually understood it in the first place) LOL!

The first book drove me crazy. The author has no sense of scale for units. Is that unit 300 men, 30 men or 3,000 men? If the logistic and unit size implications are invisible to you, the book was great. They aren't to me and it drove me crazy.
