Readers of epic fantasy series are: (1) patient--they are left in suspense between each volume, (2) persistent--they reread or at least review the previous book(s) when a new installment comes out, (3) strong--these 700-page doorstoppers are heavy, and (4) mentally agile--they follow a host of characters through a myriad of subplots. In A Game of Thrones, the first book of a projected ... (read more)

An absolutely fantastic book! I cannot wait to read the next one! This book has everything - adventure, betrayal (lots and lots of betrayal), romance, and the characterization is excellent! I didn't feel like this book read like fantasy either. Aside from talk of dragons and The Others, it felt more like I was reading historical fiction. My favorite thing about the book is the way that each chapter is told from the viewpoint of a different character. It gave so much more insight into...

Umm~ Long winded, unbearably thick, and twisted plot line was too much for my brain. Couldn't finish it.

I read about erikson's series on wikipedia, and it seemed to me that there is a lot of magic involved in the world, and the lack of it is what I like about Martin.

Thank you for the recommendation. Just to add something about Martin and your help, The Knight of Flowers is considered to be gay, these aren't some readers' thoughts, Martin said so and it's on his page, that he would have made Renly and TKoF gay if Renly hadn't died.

Can anyone recommend something very similar to this series? I tried going back to Salvatore, Pratchett, Gaiman and most other contemporary fantasy ( please don't recommend Tolkien or King, already read it), but I can't find anything that is as good as Martin.

I've read the first four books and of course loved them. A guy I work started reading them years ago and has been trying to get other people to read them. He was finally sucessful with me. We are both eagerly awaiting the fifth one this fall. Are you sure it comes out in September? I went to Martin's web site and couldn't see where it said a date other than sometime in the fall
