Imaginative and witty... took me a couple of chapters to figure out what was going on but enjoyed the whole ride.

As always, Marshall Smith delivers compelling narrative in his singular writing style and keeps you guessing until the end. What strikes me most about his books is how likeable he makes the protagonist. Hap Thompson is hilariously sardonic and I was with him from the first page. Marshall Smith continues to do ultimate justice to the cyberpunk genre.

** spoiler alert ** This was a surprising book. A little confusing at the beginning, but soon it became clear that it was taking place in the future, albeit a future not-so-distant anymore. I think Michael Marshall had a blast envisioning the world of his book and it shows. The books crackles with humor and sarcasm and he enjoys showing us how he thinks technology will be used in a few years. The storyline itself is a good mystery, although he lost me at the end when the God thing showed up. I'm a staunch atheis...more This was a surprising book. The storyline itself is a good mystery, although he lost me at the end when the God thing showed up. I'm a staunch atheist and no matter how he tries to explain the deity concept, it just ruined the books for me. But not so much that I didn't enjoy it very much... until that point. Since it came late enough in the novel not to totally ruin it, I give it 4 stars.(

This one is not quite as good as his other two speculative fiction works, but still contains many of the Smith trademarks. I'm particularly fond of the self-esteem hitman. Again, read this for the atmosphere, not the plot.
