“The concept of a Corporation owning your body is very entertaining, and probably not all that far from being reality. Unfortunately the story is weak and the characters are cookie cutter. Good airplane fodder, but not something you'll spend a lot of time pondering.”

Next is another magnificent novel by Michael Crichton. The story takes place in present time at a company called Biogen which is known to be the highest ranked research facility in the world. It follows three individuals which have ties with the major company. One of these individuals is Frank Burnet, a cancer survivor whose cells were taken without him even knowing it. But the company put up a large front and a fight back with him saying they have the right to his cells and Frank has no right from profiting from the billion dollar sale. Another character is a man named Josh who is an employee at Biogen. Josh found a cure to addiction from drugs and alcohol with a project he’s been working on called the “maturity gene.” He accidentally exposes his drug addicted brother with his new discovery and the drug actually worked! News about the miracle drug spread around like wild fire, but Josh is worried about the drawbacks of the drug for he has only tested it on one rat before exposing it to his brother. He has to face the dilemma of both sharing this magnificent drug with the rest of the world illegally and get filthy rich off of the profits or wait and find out more about the drug with the problem of the possibility of other scientists discovering his cure. Henry Kendal is the final character who is a genetic researcher at Biogen. He gives an ape a half ape embryo years ago which resulted in a half ape child. He tries to raise him on his own but discovers that he bit off a lot more than he can chew. This novel should be encouraged to all students interested in going into research relating to the medical field because this book provides insight of what it may look like in the future. The writers detail truly makes the reader feel like they are right next to the characters in every single nerve quenching event. Through heavy suspense, imagery, and excitement Michael Crichton has made another masterpiece in which the reader won’t be able to put it down until the end. On the other hand, it seemed to bounce around a lot from character to character which may seem to be a bit confusing, it also is a little annoying and boring at times going on and on about details that didn’t really have an impact on the story. “Next” keeps readers hanging on the question of what will happen next throughout the book and should be highly recommended for those who are interested in the medical field or are just looking for a heart pounding read.”

I mean, yeah, transgenics is the stuff of nightmares, but the way Crichton wrote about here this book comes across as almost satire. Not sure if that's how he intended it or not.”

Definitely makes you wonder about the state of affairs in research, and hope this is not an accurate portrayal. ”
