This being a Crichton book, I came in with high expectations. Halfway through the book, I gave up reading.

I found the book's narrative to be too disjointed, taking quite a while to establish the main flow of the plot; it's all over the place - it suffers from having too many short chapters that introduce new characters and subplots concisely and takes too long to connect the dots in a timely manner that would allow the reader to make sense of it all before being overwhelmed (or just bored) by the details and minutiae.

The characters themselves weren't developed enough in a proper frame of time to allow a reader to root for or against any of them; they just weren't interesting enough.

Too bad, really, the premise of the book - genetic engineering, corporate and academic espionage and sabotage, and all the things that could go wrong because of it all - is rife with potential for a great story. I'm just puzzled why it would be Michael Crichton who couldn't deliver on this one.

Great Book! Super cool - too close to reality.

The plot bounces all over the place and never really held my interest after the first few chapters. The story just got more and more outrageous and never really came together coherently. Perhaps that was the point Crichton was trying to make - the field (and industry) of genetics has great potential for spinning out of control in ways that we can't yet imagine. Unfortunately, for me, Next just spun out of control and never recovered.

Ironic I am listening to this after reading ORYX AND CRATE by Margaret Atwood which deals with the long term consequences of gene experimentation and use.

This was a novel that focused on the capitalization of genetics and it left me very unsatisfied. There wasn’t much of a flow to this novel because it moved from different scenes and situations constantly. It was definitely chilling to consider how close we are to this kind of situation, but this wasn’t Crichton’s best work

Clearly haven't read as much Crichton as I should.

    Somewhat informative. Off-the-wall characters.

This book was confusing at times, and some parts didnt make sense.

NEXT by Michael Crichton is thrilling and hard to put down, even though some parks were confusing, and unclear, since most terms were for doctors and scientists. The main idea of this book would have to be Genetics. I learned quite alot from this book, such as new vocabulary, and scientific terms. Its mostly technology verses Ethics; playing God. This books the future world of life.
