“Neil Gaiman's voice shines through once again. The rhythm of this story was great. Yoshitaka Amano's artwork is surreal and perfect for the story. It is probably my favorite Sandman story.”the plot bunny farmer wrote this review Tuesday, May 22, 2012. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“The graphic novel version, I still really liked the artwork. A completely made-up Japanese fable about dreams and love and greed. Classic, solid Sandman! See my review here:
“neil gaiman is a master at personifying the human condition. in the sand man books he creates the physical representations of all things that drive and sustain humans through out the ages. dreams, ambition, emotions, good and evil (and all inbetween) gods, fairy tales and other fantasy condensed into a decade long host of characters and stories. oh, and it just happens to have a great changing line up of artists.”Greg Burel wrote this review Tuesday, May 1, 2012. “A different take on The Sandman.”Natalie wrote this review Friday, December 2, 2011. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“I regard this novel with different eyes now, after having grown up and reread the Sandman series and some more of Gaiman's other fiction novels.
I can say that my feelings for Amano's art have not changed one bit. Each page of his art astounds me. He is one of my favourite, favourite artists. God, if I could have a room with his art all over the walls, I would die...
However, this story itself doesn't do much for me, and I honestly don't think it ever really did. I think I only ever loved this book because of Amano. But I think it's a personal thing. Gaiman's ideas are fantastic (even better than his writing) but this book was not even really his idea. Japanese folklore doesn't interest me too much, so that is where my rating fails. Not anyone's fault but my own! One has to grow up sometime...(but not grow up TOO much).”
“Fantastic! The story was deliciously old-fashioned, with feudal lords and monks guarding temples, and spirits running free, and to have all of that couple with Yoshitaka Amano's BEAUTIFUL print illustrations was just an utter delight to read.”Jessica wrote this review Monday, September 19, 2011.
