Awakening the Buddha Within : Tibetan Wisdom for the Western World

by Lama Surya Das

If you dropped the Buddha into a modern metropolis, would he come off sounding like a 16th-century morality play or more like a drive-time disc jockey? Although I have yet to complete reading this offering, I have found that it is very insightful and have found that it is informative and inspiring at the same time. I plan to read and reread this particular book.

This is an excellent book for those interested in an introduction to Buddhism. The author has spent considerable time in Tibet, resulting in many personal anecdotes about his experiences there. He definitely put a western spin on the book, which of course is exactly what the title implies. It is very well written, overall an easy read, and an outstanding introduction to Buddhism, especially for those considering Buddhist practice and additional study. He accepts the reality that most Americans have families, jobs and worldly responsibilities and puts forth a thoughtful approach to mindful practice in the Western environment. Well done.

I am REALLY enjoying this book! I'm not sure why but every page seems to "speak" to me. I have not yet finished it but am reading it a little at a time. For those who are interested in living on a higher plane than the typical American focused on buying, shopping, using, etc., this is a fabulous book.
Great stuff!

Others have said it already. This is really an excellent book on Buddhism. Pretty complete for the neophite and insightfull for everyone. If you're looking into exploring Buddhism, and don't know for sure where to start, this could be your first book to read. The other great source of info for beginners is "Tibetan Buddhism from ground up" by A. Wallace. Peace to all sentient beings!

This book served as my introduction to Buddhism which has created a snowball effect. I've since read all of Lama Surya Das' books and then some and have given this book as a gift to close friends. I also highly recommend anything by Thich Nhat Hanh.
