Wizards from all over put their names in the Goblet to be selected to compete in the Tri-Wizard Tournament. Harry who is ineligible to enter due to age, is enter by somebody else. He is then selected and must be a part of it.

  • Harry James Potter: An orphan, Harry is the main character in the series; he lives with the disagreeable Dursleys and goes to school at Hogwarts. His parents were killed by Lord Voldemort and he has a scar on his forehead shaped like a lightning bolt; everyone in the wizarding world knows him. People idolize him or hate him.
  • Ron Weasley: Harry Potter's best friend; he goes to Hogwarts with Harry and Hermione. One of seven children.
  • Luna Lovegood: A sweet girl in Ginny's year who is in Ravenclaw. She is always helping, but is very much an individual. She comes across as a little ditzy, but in reality is very smart and observant of the world around her. She does not come in to the story until the fifth book. Great, unique person. Everyone thinks she's strange, but she really knows a lot about magical creatures and is very smart in her own way.
  • Lord Voldemort: The Dark Lord who wants to kill Harry and take over the Wizarding World.
  • Bartemius Crouch, Jr.: He is Barty Crouch's son who was thrown in Azkaban for the torture of Neville Longbottom's parents. Death-eater.
  • Petunia Dursley: Wife of Vernon and doting mother of the spoiled Dudley, she is bitterly hateful towards Harry and all things magical. She is the sister of Harry's mother.
  • Colin Creevey: A third-year Gryffindor boy who idolizes Harry Potter. Brother of Dennis Creevey. Takes pictures of everything.
  • Professor Minerva McGonagall: Professor of Transfiguration at Hogwarts, Head of Gryffindor House. Stickler to the rules. Also a registered Animagus who can turn into a cat.
  • Lily Potter: The deceased mother of Harry Potter who was killed by Voldemort. Sister of Petunia Dursley.
  • Ludovic "Ludo" Bagman: Head of Magical Games and Sports within the Ministry of Magic. Played Quidditch for England and was the best Beater for the team Wimbourne Wasps. Seems to not have control over his office. His nose looks like it's been broken.
  • Peter Pettigrew (a.k.a Wormtail) (a.k.a. Scabbers): Was Harry's father's friend prior to his betrayal of the Potter family.Servant of Lord Voldemort. Death Eater. After Voldemort's initial downfall, Pettigrew disguised himself as a rat to avoid detection and became Ron's pet, Scabbers.
  • Severus Snape: Head of Slytherin House and Potions teacher at Hogwarts. Relentlessly tries to find Harry breaking rules.
  • Victor Krum: Krum is a Bulgarian Quidditch player who might be the best seeker in the world. He played in the Quidditch World Cup, and he is from a magic school called Durmstrang.
  • Madame "Olympe" Maxime: Headmistress of Beauxbatons. Also rumored to be half giant. Larger than Hagrid.
  • Viktor Krum: Triwizard champion of Durmstrang and famous Bulgarian Quidditch Seeker. Likes Hermione Granger. Thin, dark and sallow-skinned with large curved nose and thick black eyebrows. Only 18 years old.
  • Rubeus Hagrid: Gamekeeper at Hogwarts, also teaches Care of Magical Creatures classes. He is friends with Harry, Ron and Hermione. They often go down to Hagrid's hut to talk.
  • Cho Chang: Very pretty girl who plays Seeker of the Ravenclaw Quidditch team. Harry likes Cho Chang. A fifth-year student.
  • Seamus Finnigan: Harry Potter's roommate and friend. Fourth year student.
  • Dobby: The house-elf Harry freed from the Malfoy family in Harry's second year. He idolizes Harry and works for pay in the Hogwarts kitchens; he has a strange obsession with socks. Very loyal to Harry now.
  • Dean Thomas: Harry Potter's roommate and friend. Fourth-year student.
  • Charlie Weasley: Second oldest of the Weasley children. He works with dragons in Romania.
  • Neville Longbottom: A loyal friend of Harry's
  • Molly Weasley: Mother of Ron and his siblings; she takes care of Harry as if he was her son whenever he comes to visit The Burrow. Short, plump woman with a very kind face. She knits all her sons as well as Harry sweaters for Christmas every year.
  • James Potter (a.k.a Prongs): Deceased father of Harry Potter, who was killed by Lord Voldemort
  • Ginny Weasley: The only Weasley daughter. Small and red-headed. Youngest child. Very taken with Harry.
  • Argus Filch: The bitter Squib caretaker at Hogwarts. He greatly dislikes students and often urges Dumbledore to let him try rather gruesome punishments on rule-breakers. Has a cat called Mrs Norris.
  • Igor Karkaroff: Headmaster of Durmstrang Institute. A death Eater, has been sent to Azkaban before.
  • Fred Weasley: George Weasley's twin who collaborates on harmless pranks and knows all of the secret passageways in Hogwarts.
  • Sirius Black (a.k.a Padfoot): Harry's godfather, who was sent to Azkaban prison for murder. He is an unregistered animagus, and can turn into a large black dog.
  • Gregory Goyle: One of Malfoy's goons.
  • Cedric Diggory: An extremely handsome boy of about 17 who is in his seventh year at Hogwarts. Captain and Seeker of Hufflepuff Quidditch team.
  • Percy Weasley: The snooty and pretentious Weasley brother who just started working in the Ministry of Magic in the Department of International Magical Coorperation for Mr. Crouch.
  • Mr. Roberts: The muggle who owns the camp site where the Weasleys camp during the Quidditch World Cup.
  • Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore: Headmaster at Hogwarts and the wisest wizard of the age. The only wizard Voldemort ever feared. A great mentor and friend to Harry Potter.
  • Hagrid: Hagrid is the Care of Magical Creatures teacher. He is also the Hogwarts gamekeeper.
  • Fleur Delacour: She is a part-Veela, and is also the Beauxbatons champion of the Triwizard Tournament.
  • Rita Skeeter: The obnoxious columnist for the Daily Prophet; she enjoys mixing up the facts and making the stories worse than they actually are.
  • Vernon Dursley: Harry's muggle uncle who strongly loathes magic. When he gets angry (as he usually does when Harry is around), his face turns a deep shade of purple.
  • Frank Bryce: The elderly gardener to the Riddle family. Killed by Lord Voldemort. Accused of killing the Riddles.
  • Sibyll Trelawney: The Professor of Divination who is considered a fraud by Harry and his friends .
  • Vincent Crabbe: One of Malfoy's dimwitted cronies.
  • Amos Diggory: The very proud father of Cedric Diggory. Works at the Ministry of Magic in the Department for Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures..
  • Hermione Granger: A smart, secretive, sometimes uppity muggle-born, who helps Harry and Ron defeat evil. They face many obstacles throughout their childhood and teen years. A beautiful girl inside and out.
  • Bartemius "Barty" Crouch, Sr.: Head of the Department for International Magical Cooperation; he is a very serious and stern man who can speak over 200 languages.
  • Moaning Myrtle: Whiney ghost of a girl who haunts the girls' bathroom on Hogwarts's second floor. She is helpful to Harry in this book.
  • Winky: The former house-elf of Barty Crouch Sr. Works in the Hogwarts kitchens with Dobby and other House-elves. Extremely attached to her Master.
  • Nearly-Headless Nick: The friendly and noble Gryffindor ghost whose head is only held by a thin strip of skin.
  • Draco Malfoy: A young and haughty pure-blooded Slytherin, who is the rival of Harry Potter. Pale boy with pointed face and white-blond hair. A fourth year Hogwarts student too.
  • Cornelius Fudge: Minister of Magic, partial to lime green bowler hats.
  • Remus Lupin (a.k.a Moony): Harry's old teacher.
  • Arthur Weasley: Ron's father who works at the Ministry of Magic in the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts department.
  • George Weasley: Fred Weasley's twin who collaborates on harmless pranks and knows possibly many of the secret passageways in Hogwarts.
  • Bill Weasley: William Arthur Weasley (Bill) is the eldest Weasley child. He works at Gringott's Bank in Egypt as a curse-breaker. Former Head Boy at Hogwarts. He is cool: tall with long hair, usually tied in a ponytail and has an earring.
  • Lucius Malfoy: Father of Draco Malfoy; he is extremely wealthy and is from an old pure-blooded wizard family. He and his son both despise muggleborns.
  • Peeves: The poltergeist who enjoys to play pranks on the students and to leave messes for Filch to clean up.
  • Dudley Dursley: The whale-sized cousin of Harry and pampered son of the Dursleys.
  • Bertha Jorkins: The missing ministry worker.
  • Bellatrix Lestrange: One of Voldemort's most devoted Death Eaters. She and her husband currently reside in Azkaban.
  • Tom Riddle: Voldemort's original name, and the name of his Muggle father.
  • Madam "Poppy" Pomfrey: the Matron at Hogwarts
  • Mrs Norris: Filch's cat
  • Lee Jordan: Quidditch commentator and the Weasley twins' best friend.
  • Nagini: Lord Voldemort's pet snake.

  • Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry: Best wizarding school ever created. It is run by Professor Albus Dumbledore.

  • 4 Privet Drive, the Dursley home: Home of Vernon, Petunia and Dudley Dursley. Serves as Harrys's home during his summer holidays.

  • Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry: The school where the tournament takes place.
  • Gryffindor: is one of the four Houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, founded by Godric Gryffindor. Its emblematic animal is the lion and its colours are scarlet and gold. Minerva McGonagall is the most recent Head of House. Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, also known as "Nearly Headless Nick" is the house ghost. The particular characteristics of students sorted into Gryffindor are courage and chivalry, of which the lion is the symbol. Some Gryffindor students are: Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ronald Weasley, Ginny Weasley.
  • Ravenclaw: is one of the four Houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, founded by Rowena Ravenclaw. Members of this house are characterised by their intelligence and cleverness. Its house colours are blue and bronze, and its symbol is the eagle. The house ghost, who in life was the daughter of the house's founder Rowena Ravenclaw, is the Grey Lady.   • Slytherin: is one of the four Houses at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and is traditionally home to students who exhibit such traits as cunning and ambition. Its emblematic animal is the snake and its colours are green and silver. Founded by Salazar Slytherin, the house is comprised mostly of pure-blood students, due to its founder's mistrust of Muggle-born witches and wizards. The house has a negative reputation, with many claiming that it is the source of most Dark Wizards in Britain, notably Tom Marvolo Riddle, a.k.a. Lord Voldemort, as well as many of his Death Eaters. Some Slytherin students are: Draco Malfoy, Severus Snape or Vincent Crabbe.
  • Hufflepuff: is one of the four Houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Its founder was the medieval witch Helga Hufflepuff. The Head of Hufflepuff is Pomona Sprout. The Fat Friar is the House's patron ghost. Hufflepuff is the most inclusive among the four houses, valuing hard work, patience, friendship and fair play rather than a particular aptitude in its members. Its emblematic animal is the badger, and yellow and black are its colours. Some Hufflepuff students are: Cedric Diggory, Nyphadora Tonks.
  • Beauxbatons: Another wizarding school that is from France. They compete in the Triwizard Tournament with Fleur Delacour as their school champion.
  • Durmstrang: Another wizarding school that is from the north. They also compete in the Triwizard Tournament with Victor Krum as their champion. With Igor Karkaroff as its headmaster,this school is also said to have a suspicious focus on the Dark Arts.

  • Goblet of Fire: A magical goblet used to choose people for the Triwizard tournment.
  • Muggle: A human who does not exhibit magical talents.
  • Mudblood: An offensive term for a wizard or witch who was 'muggle-born' or not born into a wizarding family.
  • Quidditch: A wizarding game played on broom sticks. Each team has 7 players:3 chasers, 2 beaters, and a seeker. The chaser passes the quaffle and shoots in the goals. The beaters hit to balls called bludgers that try to knock the players off their broomsticks. The beaters knock the bludgers away from their teammates, and back to the other the team. The seeker is so supposed to search for the snitch. It is very hard to catch, but when they do, they win 150 points and ends the game.
  • Azkaban: Prison fortress where wizarding criminals are sent. Guarded day and night by the terrifying Dementors, who drain peace, hope and happiness out of any human who comes too close to them
  • Animagi: Wizards who can turn themselves into animals at will. The singular form is animagus
  • Squib: A Squib is a non-magical person who is born to at least one magical parent. Squibs are, in essence, the antithesis of Muggle-born wizards and witches. They are rare and are looked upon with some degree of disdain by some witches and wizards, particularly pure-bloods.
  • Swotty: given to studying hard, esp to the exclusion of other activities
  • Clamber: to climb, using both feet and hands; climb with effort or difficulty
  • Balaclava: knitted cap that covers the head, neck, and tops of the shoulders
  • Gateau: A French cake.
  • Unctuous: Oily, smarmy, ingratiating; often describing a personaility.
  • Haddock: A type of fish in the Cod family.
  • Commiserate: Sympathize.
  • Tetchy: Overly sensitive; irritable, peevish.
  • Glutinous: Gummy; having the quality of glue.

Some violence, some bad things happen that may upset some young children. Since the characters are 14, they're starting to notice the opposite sex; J.K. Rowling handles this well. This fourth in the series keeps the positive messages of friendship and loyalty going strong.
