As his fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry approaches, 15-year-old Harry Potter is in full-blown adolescence, complete with regular outbursts of rage, a nearly debilitating crush, and the blooming of a powerful sense of rebellion. It's been yet another infuriating and boring summer with the despicable Dursleys, this time with minimal contact from our hero's non-Muggle friends from school. Harry is feeling especially edgy at the lack of news from the magic world, wondering when the freshly revived evil Lord Voldemort will strike. Returning to Hogwarts will be a relief... or will it?
The fifth book in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series follows the darkest year yet for our young wizard, who finds himself knocked down a peg or three after the events of last year. Somehow, over the summer, gossip (usually traced back to the magic world's newspaper, the Daily Prophet) has turned Harry's tragic and heroic encounter with Voldemort at the Triwizard Tournament into... see complete book description

I agree with Miraye, Matthew why do have to be so mean? Don't you realize that a person has feelings, and that those feelings can get hurt if you say the wrong thing? You need to respect that! You shouldn't make people feel so meaningless. Thank you for listening.

Now, I think that J.k. Rowling had every right to reveal Dumbledore's personality. Perhaps she just wanted to throw in some trivia. But it doesn't make the book less interesting or good!

I think she just decided to reveal her interpretations of her own character. I think authors do have impressions of their characters just like the readers do...

though i was aware of it,i was not interested in this part of Dumbeldore's life. his principles in life and his subtle manner to look at every sphere in life is so amazing that one would give a blind eye to all this facts about him. hence this was irrelevant for me also.

I don't think it was for publicity but rather just a little known tid bit of information given to fans who still want more of the potter universe. I never really considered that Dumbledore might be gay until the 7th novel but I did wonder why he wasn't married. The reason I think that it wasn't in the book was because it wasn't important to the story. Dumbledore's sexual preference had no bearing on the outcome of series and therefore was irrelevant.

If I may, JK was asked about the love of Dubledore's life in an interview. That was when she outed him. She said she was surprised no one had asked her this before. I imagine if no one had asked she would not have mentioned it.

Just something I've been noticing - Matthew, a number of your comments don't pertain to the discussions at hand. All you do is bump other people down a notch. Its unecessary.

What do you think was the reason for JK Rowling releasing *after the books were finished* that Dumbledore was gay? Was it a last ditch effort for some publicity? Or did she think it was necessary to end the stories? If so, why wasn't it in the book?
