This is a brilliant book. The plot is clever and full of those "no way!" moments that I love in mysteries. I laughed out loud more than once - Fandorin is such a silly and unassuming hero, and his use of the "male corset" was absolutely divine. I did see a few things coming - but the writing...

Competent but the faux 19th Century style was a little tedious.

Sort of like reading a Nancy Drew novel but a bit older in context. Wouldn't mind reading another book written by the same author or even one in the same Fandorin series.

Fast-paced (both cause and effect of my finishing it off in one sitting), full of characters (maybe it only felt so because I'm unfamiliar with Russian names). I was just marvelling at the unconventional denouement, when... it turned out to be not so unconventional, but no less affecting, after all.

Denise: A Russian co-worker suggested this author. Erast Fandorin is a gentleman sleuth who solves murders and mysteries in Tsarist Russia in Moscow 1876. I believe this is the first of a series of books by Akunin and I ended up reading 3 of them. A bit slow for me but interesting to get to read a foreign writer's book (translated into English of course).

I read this about 5 years ago so I don't remember the details, but I do remember liking it. I guess I didn't realize it was going to be a series. I'll have to look for other titles.

First of the Fandorin series. Pretty good. Better, I think, than the Death of Achilles. For me, The Turkish Gambit is still the most interesting because of the setting at the Battle of Plevna. This is the only Akunin novel so far to show any character development, as Fandorin progresses from naive beginner through journeyman detective stage and through trauma that leaves his hair white at the temples (cheap trick). It is easy to see why Akunin is so popular. Engaging, complex plots, false leads, interesting characters. Akunin is able to make the reader care about Fandorin's fate.
