If you loved DEEP SECRET by DWJ, you'll LOVE this!

Quite confusing, especially because only in the last chapters you begin to understand what's going on, but in the end I liked it.

So. Why haven't I read this before? Why didn't I find this author earlier? Why isn't this my childhood? Does teenage years count as childhood? Can it? I need to gather up on books before hand.

This was amazing. I mean, fuck man. I started it with well, good expectations, because I've heard a lot about Diana Wynne Jones and watched Howl's Moving Castle and read reviews and people loved her, loved her books. I just didn't know they were going to rock my world. Throughout the book I kept trying to make guesses on who the four voices were, what would happen in the end, and one part of a review of this book - what makes it right for a wizard to make a child fight a dark-lord for him- and that Jones is known as a ethical writer.

This entire book twisted and turned and moved like a time-shifting labyrinth it was. It went from science-fiction to pure fantasy and back to science-fiction and oh gods if I knew genres to the specific point I would be saying everything. I mean! Medieval Fantasy! Space Science Fiction! Aliens! Worlds & Dimensions and oh, the Arthurian Legends, that dear king, oh my heart. My heart is obviously to the wrong myths, but anything with Arthur and Merlin appearing will make me be joyful.

The characters. EVERYTHING CAME TOGETHER I cannot deal with how awesome it all was. HUME. you were Merlin? MERLIN. UGH MAN I LOVE YOU LIKE A HARSH THING. Vierren, my girl, turning 12 again? Growing weak at the knees of a grim reaper's smile? I love you. You are not a beauty but y`know, you're awesome and strong and amazing and bossy and true to yourself and everything. Even the Reginers - WHAT AMAZING VILLAINS. I don't know if I would have wanted more history, back story to the Reginers and their story beyond the Reginer One & Three story.

    One thing.
I want to reread this book, and see what I had been missing in my hurried rush of reading because NEEDMORE, and also all the little clues and details now that I know everything.
But fuck. Maybe when I have time. But totally.[3

I WANT MORE OF HER BOOKS.

Granted, I rushed it, and the chronology is difficult to follow anyways, as it is purposefully all over the place. That said, Diana Wynne Jones has her classic quirky characters that are easy to identify with, its interaction with contemporary society is really fun, and its a fast-paced, lively read. Not life-changing, but fun to read, especially if you can devote time to getting immersed in the world which is sort of fractured and confusing in its construction (on purpose). Also sort of cool for fantasy fans who get an inside joke or two at the end.

Hexwood twists and turns in a way that is more fragmented than any other book I've read which has been marketed at a "youth" audience. The narrative dips in and out of linear narrative events, with characters varying in age, and time appearing to be unsteady and sporadic. The way that the story jumps from point to point (giving the reader very few explanations) for most of the book, is excellently mysterious, and as events begin to make sense it's revealed to be a very clever tapestry of narrative where the non-linear events in the story fit together nicely when the author chooses to reveal them. Throughout Hexwood, Diana Wynne Jones' brilliant sense of humour is hugely apparent, and with more of a cheeky cynicism than some of her other works. She makes various wickedly tongue in cheek references to medieval folklore, politics and British society. In all, a fantastic book, hugely addictive and (as usual with this great author) a pleasure to read.

People who've read this would know what I'm saying when I say that this book boggles. Time and space continuum is almost totally collapsed and if you're trying to work this out in a linear fashion you're in for a long haul. Having said that, Jones's book is amazing in how she manages to get the reader completely lost and still manage to pull everything together spectacularly.
It's easy for a tv prog to pull such a stunt off but in a book, the effect is way more confusing and challenging. I hated it the first time I read it (but then I hadn't pinned down the time jumps, flips and reversals then) but absolutely enjoyed it the second.

To be honest, I found the first 60 pages or so hard to get through but I had a feeling that in typical DWJ fashion HEXWOOD would astound me if I can manage to chug through the scattered and confusing beginning (I'm using those adjectives in the best possible sense); And I'm happy to say that I was right. I'm looking forward to rereading this for years to come. :D

A book hasn't made me want to laugh out loud and jump for the pure pleasure of reading like this for a long time.

Very good, but a bit confusing. About a girl who has these voices in her head, who one day meets a man that says he just woke up from a deep slumber of a century. Only thing is, she saw him yesterday.

I really liked this book, though there were some parts that I had to reread to follow.
