It concerns me to see earlier comments comparing it to Gone With the Wind however if it has opened readers' eyes into the world beyond what is usually depicted about life during those...” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It“Too wordy! Not really my type of book since the whole book was pretty much "Life was Hard!" Ya, I understand! The only chapters I really liked were the last 'happily ever after' chapters.” see full review » see other reviews » |

This book was a harsh depiction of slave life before, during, and after the civil war. Even though there were many tragic events depicted in the novel, I love that the feeling of hope for a better life pervaded the story. This book has been compared to Gone With the Wind. They are both great novels, but the only thing they have in common is the time and place setting. There is a world of difference between white, privileged Scarlett O'Hara, and mixed-race house slave Vyry. While Gone With the Wind strived to maintain the romanticism of plantation life, Jubilee sought to expose the harsh realities of slavery. ”

The author however does get caught up in long paragraphs of no real importance. Walker will go on for a long time about what Vyry cooked and it goes from feeling authentic to feeling extraneous. ”

It gets a bit dry, but once you are into it you cant put it down. I read this in only three days. The last day I read almost half of it because I couldnt put it down.”
