This is one of the most influential books to ever have been written which provides the Black female slave experience, that which is rarely talked about in history books and other literature. I agree, comparing this to Gone With The Wind is concerning, because that story romanticizes Scarlet O'Hara, the Civil War and slavery, heorizing the white slave owner. This story is true because Vyry is Margaret Walker's great great Grand-mother I believe, and tells the stegnth and violence of slavery, the war and reconstruction from a different point outside of the dominant white ideology. Should be required reading for everyone. Beautiful story of truth, resistance and survival.

This is one my favorite books to read and read again. I find strength in the character of Vyry as she holds hope that her life can change and looks for the good in others.

I read this book as a teenager and still love it as an adult. I preceeds Roots, and is a real and inspiring. If one is reading about the South, this book paired with Gone With the Wind gives a complete picture of the time period
