I once heard Gloria Steinem say that Ayn Rand was smart, but had no sense of humor. After reading this, I can believe she didn't have a sense of humor. I can't imagine she was that smart--at least about human nature. The people who really think that Ayn Rand's view of Utopia would really work are seriously naive or possibly mentally ill. Atlas Shrugged is mildly intresting as a story, though overlong. As a blueprint for Utopia it is laughable.

Perhaps I am wrong, but isn't the idea that the novel represents a dystopia? And therefore it is as you stated not supposed to be reasonable?

You are very insightful regarding Rand's lack of humor. She was rather humorless as a person, and there has been some discussion that I've found that people have theorized if she were bipolar. If you read any works ABOUT her you will see that there is discussion about her being depressed and depressive to be around at times. I think Rand herself would, however, toss aside the idea of "Utopia." She really was writing about individual freedom and the costs to the talented and able in society for too much governmental control.
