This book was a fascinating read and glimpse into the mind of a great, visionary author. Rand is a ruthless exposer of things as they really are, although...” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It7 of 14 members found this review helpful“I once heard Gloria Steinem say that Ayn Rand was smart, but had no sense of humor. After reading this, I can believe she didn't have a sense of humor. I can't imagine she was that smart--at least about human nature. The people who really think that Ayn Rand's view of Utopia would really work...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“It took me over a year but somehow I got through it. I actually agree with many of the tenets of Rand's philosophy, Objectivism, but I think she sucked as a novelist. It is not an easy read, much like eating Saltines without anything to drink. I felt I should read it because I needed to know why so many people seem to hate Ayn Rand. Call me nuts but I might just try to get through it again before I die.”

Love everything about this story; from the theory of objectivism Rand so meticulously lays out, to the romance, characters, and setting. The four most perfect men of all time reside within the pages of this book.”

Still, it's always impressive when an author can use her characters to carry ideas that are heavy as the world's weight (that's a metaphor and a double entendre...I'll give you a minute...)...Okay. Also, kudos to any writer who can make getting through their novel feel like a personal accomplishment. Who is John Galt?”

Of course, leaving the problems of the world behind, though tempting, is not necessarily the way to go. That said, her use of language is some of the best I've seen.”
