Hi there, Dragonlance fans. This is Donald J. Bingle, the author of "Perfect" in The Players of Gilean. I was invited to write this story (actually of novella length) based on my experiences as a writer of adventures and source materials for role-playing games and on my story "Dragon's Throat" in The Search for Magic. (Some of you out there probably also know that I wrote a lot of tournament scenarios for the RPGA back in the day and was the world's highest rank player of classic role-playing games for more than fifteen years.) This anthology was in the works for an extended period of time and I think I was invited to write a story after most of the other stories had already been finished.
This was, at the time, the longest piece of fiction that I had written. It also was my most extensive back and forth with an editor of pretty much everything that I have ever written. Scenes were added and dropped, characters were changed and emphasized or de-emphasized, details revised, and on and on. Hopefully, the story turned out the better for all that work--I think so. The success of that process and this story did end up opening an opportunity for me to author a book for Wizards of the Coast, but long story short, I ended up giving the project a pass. Perhaps I was crazy to pass on the project, but please don't feel obligated to email me to say so.
"Perfect" is also proof that I can write a story in which people don't die, but instead live happily ever after.
Let me know what you think.
