- Marc Westbrook: Criminal defense attorney in Richmond and a relative of the famous author, Luke Westbrook. Is also the owner of Westbrook, the family estate that Josie Douglas is currently renting.
- Pendragon: A large (possibly 20#), black cat that has adopted Josie and Marc. He seems to have attributes that very "uncat" like.
- Luke Westbrook: Famous mystery author who build the house in the 1930s and supposedly committed suicide in the Westbrook house in 1944.
- Anne: Marc's sister. Married with three children, lives in Kentucky and trains race horses.
- Tucker MacKenzie: Marc's best friend since childhood, a writer and very computer savy.
- Neil Ferris: Marc's friend from college and a doctor, an orthopedic specialist.
