    We had to read this book in Honor's English 9. Everyone complained about having to read it, but I think that it was a moderate read. It wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible

    “He rode into our Valley in the summer of ’89.” “Call me Shane” he said. He never told us more. Mysterious and secretive was this gentle stranger. Beneath his calm and pensive visage, however, there was something more. Peering out below his dark, handsome hat, the blue eyes pierced the air with a troubled gaze. Anxiously and continually did they meander from the sights that surrounded him; while his slim figured stood erect, with an unmovable tension. He was “Mysterious. But more than that. Dangerous.” {excerpts taken from Shane, chapter one}
    In the year of 1949, Jack Schaefer’s first novel, Shane, was published. Although Schaefer was a man who never truly experienced the west, Shane quickly became known as one of the best westerns of all time, and was known as one of the most popular books of the 20th century. Subsequently, Schaefer went on to write many more westerns, however Shane remained his best known and most acclaimed novel.
    While many westerns have been published over time, Shane continues to be one of the most loved westerns for the intrigue and suspense which it stirs up in the minds of readers. Throughout this novel, readers are captivated by the masterful way in which Schaefer portrays this mysterious rider, known as Shane. Skillfully the author weaves danger into the plot, thrill into the setting, and mystery into the characters; causing the readers to fill with alacrity to reach the tales end.
    Swiftly and silently a lone rider gallops up the road. With him, came a penetrating chill. Silently he sat, mounted upon his horse, erect and tall. His past was an unknown passage, for, “He would never speak of it, not in any way at all. Even his name remained mysterious … “Call me Shane,” he said, and that was all he ever said.” {Shane, chapter five} While Shane seems to be a gentle man, with a noble character, there were still many questions that remained unanswered. Beneath his gentleness, lies a cold, troubled conscience. Quietly it loitered within his eyes, putting his entire body in alert tension.
    Yet, there was something more about him. Puzzlingly and peculiar was the fact that, “Shane carried no gun.” {Shane, chapter four} Rapidly, this adds to the mystery of this seemingly dangerous man. However, on one horrible and critical day, when hearing of the murder of a certain man, circumstances urge him to put his pistol into action once again. “Belt and holster and gun… These were not things he was wearing or carrying. They were part of him, part of the man, of the full sum of the integrate force that was Shane.” {Shane, chapter thirteen}
    Ultimately, Shane is the story of a man who is trying desperately to escape his past, yet finds that it is an impossible task. Beyond this, however, Shane realizes the power of friendship and love when he meets up with the Starrett family, and quickly becomes a part of their lives. Throughout this story, Schaefer successfully regales his readers with the sense of mystery and danger, which is so closely interwoven into this thrilling story, leaving readers with excited sensations.
