While dealing with sexual and physical abuse in her past by her parents, Precious must push herself towards the future. The first chapter begins with Precious recounting sexual abuse, the birth of her first child, and physical abuse from her mother. She is accepted into the Each One Teach One program where she learns to read and write a difficult task for an illiterate teenager. Precious also meets Ms. Rain, a radical teacher that pushes Precious to excel in reading and writing. But Precious's life is plagued with difficulties.
