This book takes place in Harlem about a young African American girl named Claireece Precious Jones, having a second child by her father. She is a high school girl who is illiterate, overweight, broke, HIV positive, and etc.. In this book,...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“I thought it was a great book, however if you are not use to reading in that dialect it could be a difficult read. It is written how an illiterate person may write something. ”

The language is coarse, the subject matter is distasteful, the main character's plight is heartbreaking, but the book was great. The more we talk about issues like incest and child molestation, the easier it will be for survivors to get the help they need. It was also a good antidote for the Twilight mania going on right now. It reminds me we need to get out in the real world and help people like the main character who think they are unloveable. Great book.”

Her father began molesting her when she was still in diapers. She was pregnant by him at age 12 and again at age 16. Her mother beat her. She couldn't read. And if that's not enough, when her father died of aids she discovered that she too was HIV positive. Fortunately for her though, one of her persistent teachers got her to enroll in a different school which was geared to meet the needs of people just like Precious. This is a very fast, east read that leaves you troubled but hopeful.”

I can honestly say that this is one of my favorite books that i have read. However it is not because it is a great book with a happy ending, it is the complete opposite. I think the thing that I like most about this book, is the connection that the reader is able to make with the main character. It is about a girl who is 16 who has been through a lot. She had to deal with more pain and misfortune in her life than most 16 year old teens have to. Throughout the book she is trying to better herself facing many different obstacles like and abusive mother and father. I wasn't able to relate to the things that she went through but i felt sympathy for her. This book does a great job at making the reader feel sympathy. In general it is a very sad story and when i heard that a movie was being made, i really wanted to see it. I saw it the day it came out and i knowing the book, i knew what to expect from the movie. Most of the time movies don't do the book justice, but i think the movie was basically exactly like the book. There were no drastic changes made. I enjoyed the movie so much and I am telling others to see it. ”

Precious chronicles a tale of mental illness, physical & sexual abuse, coupled with incest, self-hatred and unconscious ignorance. The author Sapphire is a compelling storyteller, her characters are complex, unnerving and riveting. This book is a must read.”

I was disgusted, nauseated, angry, and hurt by the way Precious was treated throughout her childhood. I am horrified that things such as this exist. What horrifies me the most is the fact that I have a daughter. While reading this novel, I could do nothing but think of my child. I could never do her the way Precious was done by her mother. Although Precious was faced with a life of utter despair, she rose above her obstacles and accomplished the unthinkable. The book is inspiring if you are able to get past the content. ”
