Themes & Symbolism edit see section history

  • Overconfidence: Daring the Fates or God to strike you down, specifically by declaring a human construction to be safe and even invincible, is the unmistakable theme here. Pellegrino compares the sinking of the "Titanic" to the "Challenger" explosion, for instance. Even he couldn't have foreseen the brutal irony of using the World Trade Center in a diagram to show the scale of the "Titanic" to it and to thedepth of the water the ship sank in.
