10 - really really a 10. I can't believe my luck with the last books I have chosen to read. This is fantasy. And not a very long book - so it was amazing the saga and lore that this brilliant author has written. I am afraid to try her other books for fear of ruining the spell. I loved her use of language.

An okay book. The first book in the Chalion series. I prefer the 2nd book myself. But it does explain a few things that would be needed to know in the 2nd book. So I HAD to read the 1st. In general it's a good fantasy read, but not one I'd put on my shelf or read more than once.

I really like this writer - her view of the world has an old world beauty to it.

I read this on the recommendation of friend and it exceeded all my expectations. This is a character-driven book with a lot of interesting personalities vying for time. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.

This book starts out well, with an ex-slave whose slavery has actually changed him. Unfortunately, towards the later part of the book, Bujold falls into some of the more well-trodden paths of fantasy. Miles from her Vorkosigan novels is more interesting than all the characters in this book put together.

This is one of those books that I wish I could read again for the first time. It's a world that bears no resemblance to the usual pale Tolkien imitation fantasy, and it is absolutely gorgeous and new. I don't just recommend this to people, I foist it upon them. And if you like this, believe it or not the sequel is better.
