“10 - really really a 10. I can't believe my luck with the last books I have chosen to read. This is fantasy. And not a very long book - so it was amazing the saga and lore that this brilliant author has written. I am afraid to try her other books for fear of ruining the spell. I loved her use of language. ”

“An okay book. The first book in the Chalion series. I prefer the 2nd book myself. But it does explain a few things that would be needed to know in the 2nd book. So I HAD to read the 1st. In general it's a good fantasy read, but not one I'd put on my shelf or read more than once.”

“I read this on the recommendation of friend and it exceeded all my expectations. This is a character-driven book with a lot of interesting personalities vying for time. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.”

“This book starts out well, with an ex-slave whose slavery has actually changed him. Unfortunately, towards the later part of the book, Bujold falls into some of the more well-trodden paths of fantasy. Miles from her Vorkosigan novels is more interesting than all the characters in this book put together.”

It's a world that bears no resemblance to the usual pale Tolkien imitation fantasy, and it is absolutely gorgeous and new. I don't just recommend this to people, I foist it upon them. And if you like this, believe it or not the sequel is better.”
