Lyrical, descriptive passages tell the story of Sophie who is sent to live in New York with her mother after spending her early years with her Aunt in Haiti. The coming of age tale and family relationships are imbued with both personal family history and cultural habits that at times enrich and at times destroy the lives of the main characters. Evocative, emotional, and engaging characters.

Such a beautiful story of a Haitian girl who is born out of the petals of the roses, water from the stream and a chunk of the sky. [3

At an astonishingly young age, Edwidge Danticat has become one of our most celebrated new novelists, a writer who evokes the wonder, terror, and heartache of her native Haiti--and the enduring strength of Haiti's women--with a vibrant imagery and narrative grace that bear witness to her people's..

This book was OK, I would give it a 2.5 if possible. The story was mildly interesting, but I did not identify or become emotionally involved with any of the characters. It did not "draw me in", but was good for an easy Saturday afternoon read.

Simply but beautiful book which I could not put down, despite its sadness. Story of a young Haitian girl and her family, replete with cultural craziness regarding women ("testing"). How the heroine learned to face her past and overcome her fate was inspirational. Looking forward to discussing with the Book Club!

Danticat writes beautifully and tells stories that we sometimes don't want to hear. This is an important American story because it contains the memory of many women who deal with violence and poverty in their families from very young ages.
