See my review for Last of the Mohicans. Then picture a less grand storyline, but just as engaging storyline. Deerslayer is a great character and I loved reading about him. One particularly memorable scene is when Judith asks him if he loves her, and he chooses his freedom instead in an almost embarrassed manner.

I was considering reading all of the Leatherstocking Tales and starting off by reading The Deerslaver, but I personally did not find Cooper's style of writing enjoyable to read. The tale is often interrupted by long-winded dialogue. The plot, I'll admit is good, but its accounted is is too drawn out for my taste.
