Throughout the entire story is the mystery of who the counterfeiter is, this as well as the unique world Beka lives in, complete with magic and dukes, creates a drive to read the book cover to cover and will leave you annoyed with the real world for getting in the way of your reading time.
Another charm of the book is the host of characters with such different personality's. Two such people that personify this concept magnificently would be Rosto the Piper and Pearl Swine. Both are the respective King and Queen of the Theives in their respective cities, yet Rosto is more likable in his care and concern for the people he owes a duty too , in comparison to the greedy, despicable Pearl Swine who shows almost no concern for the people under her care.
Aside from the characters themselves, something else about the book I found interesting about the book were the diary entries intermingled throughout the book. They both functioned to offer more insight into the mind of Beka herself, but they also helped bring the reader to notice sly plot hints earlier in the book that may or may not have been noticed. Not only did they bring attention to the plot hints but they also helped to focus the readers attention on what the author wanted them "seeing." A very useful literary device if I must say so myself.
In all I found the book incredibly enjoyable, and was very nearly ready to snap at the first person to remind me that I needed to do things like eat and sleep; definitely a must read for those who enjoy a book with a strong, both mentally and physically, female as the main character.”
