Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac
By Gabrielle Zevin

Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac is a story about self-discovery. The hook at the start of the story was enough to capture my interest in reading this novel. “Above all, mine is a love story. And like most love stories, this one involves...

Not bad. I was expecting more. There was a whole chunk of the book that I found wierd. Should be interesting to see what the girls in book club think of it (if they finish the book - last two books weren't completed by a majority of the girls).

In Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac by Gabrielle Zevin we meet Naomi, a 16 year old girl who falls down the stairs outside of her school and as a result has selective amnesia. A bit of a twist on the normal coming-of-age type story in that Naomi has to learn about the person she was and make decisions on who the person she wants to be is.

The cast of characters were good, some more so than others. I loved William "Coach" Landsman and was so-so with "Ace" and James... it was quite obvious the author loved Coach quite a bit more than the others as he was more well-rounded and alive to me.

The story kept up great pace and had quite a few laugh-out-loud moments. I loved the attention to detail given to the relationship between Coach and Naomi and I was kept guessing throughout the majority of the book. I knew where it should be ending, but up until the last 20% of the book or so I wasn't sure how she was going to get there. Granted, some of the tricks used were a bit convenient, it still worked out and made for a solid young adult read. Unlike Elsewhere, this book reminded me more of Sara Zarr's novels.

I thought it was interesting after the main character was diagnosed with Amnesia when she would go into her bedroom and look back at the person she was before amnesia. They were two very different people and I thought that was cool. Gabrielle Zevin, you're my hero!

A great book. I picked it up expecting not much of it and ended up really enjoying it. Books are better enjoyed without expectations. It wasn't the most "electrifying" book, but it was definitely a beautiful story. I loved it.

I thought Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac was pretty good. I finished it in one weekend, which obiviously means I liked it. The only thing I didn't like, was that I was confused at the end. Did she end up with Will or James? Or was she just Naomi, no boyfriend at all?
