What I like about Tom Clancy is his usually flawless development of complicated plots and subplots through strategic detail and frenetically paced action--he doesn't tell you what is happening, he shows it to you as it's happening, and that is what keeps the pages turning. This book was uncharacteristic in that it was nearly all technical detail with very little action, and the plot development, while thorough, was imbalanced--too much attention paid early on to things that had little bearing on the climax. It took me many months to complete it because after a few pages, I grew tired and wanted to read something else instead.

The world is a changed place what with Germany united, and the mid-east in the midst of a peace agreement with the Arabs and Palestinians. Not everyone is happy with the treaty, though. Terrorists gain control of a nuclear bomb, and Jack Ryan must stop them. President Fowler and his National Security Adviser (and lover) Elizabeth Elliott, are investigating Jack’s past. Will they be an obstacle to Ryan? Meet Ismael Qati and Ibraham Ghosn and Doctor Fromm, building a terroristic bomb in the mid-east. Also, Marvin Russell, American Indian who feels at home with the Palestinians (they lost their home just like him). Caroline Ryan, John Clark, Ding. The book barrels into a terrifying crescendo. If you read this, you'll want to read Debt of Honor, then Executive Orders.
