Once again another beautiful historically-inspired fantasy novel from Kay. While Tigana is still the best, this is a close 2nd. The setting is inspired by France/Germany/Italy in the medieval period.

This book is very long. There are parts that move along and are so interesting that I did not want to put the book down then I would come to another long section. However I did finish reading the book. The end was ok but I would have like more information about what happened to all the characters rather than hints.

Actually I gave up on this one about halfway through and will probably never go back to finish it. I couldn't find a single character to like, dislike, or admire. Nothing made me ask the page-turning question "And then what?" A real disappointment, since this book was highly recommended by a friend who knows my reading taste.
