A bit of a hard read but well worth it.

I cannot give a full review as I am still reading this book, but I will review what I've read so far:

Action is always present in this intense novel by revered author Tom Clancy, wether it be passive or clearly stated. It may be a war battle from the point of view of a guerrilla fighter in Afghanistan or an extremely tedious seeming interrigation and follow-up report and counter-invedtigation by the KGB or CIA officer. Much intense thought is also ecountered when the inner workings of CIA's highest authority, the president, as well as the ponderings of the people who actually run the show, espionage and counter-espionage agents of both the CIA and their soviet counterparts. Definitely a must-read for any Clancy fan.

Clancy again doing what he does best: technothriller suspense. This book is, of course, based on the pre-Berlin Wall Soviet Union. There are intimations in the story, however, shining flashlights in the direction of a more "free" Russia. The book involves the "Cardinal," a disenchanted WWII Soviet war hero turned Western spy. The book has multiple subplots all occuring in unison, but Clancy's simple storytelling prevents any confusion along the way.

The Defection of the Chairman of the KGB happens in this novel. Slightly cheesy and could do more work in the planning stages.

I read this book based on a recommendation from a college professor who taught a course on "Intelligence and National Security." He worked in the "Intelligence" field and indicated that this is a good book to read to get an idea of what "spy games" are like. This is the first Clancy book I've read, although I did not realize when I picked it up that it is in the middle of the John Clark/Jack Ryan series. I don't think you need to read them in order, although it may be a good idea because it would have been nice to know the reoccurring characters better. There were several ties to "The Hunt for Red October," and while I'm familiar with the plot from seeing the movie several years ago, I am not sure I picked up on everything. Still, all in all, this was an excellent read. The story kept me engaged (which is saying something for such a long book), and oddly enough I found myself rooting for several different sides. I look forward to reading more books in the series and by Clancy in general.
