“Clancy again doing what he does best: technothriller suspense. This book is, of course, based on the pre-Berlin Wall Soviet Union. There are intimations in the story, however, shining flashlights in the direction of a more "free" Russia. The book involves the "Cardinal," a disenchanted WWII Soviet war hero turned Western spy. The book has multiple subplots all occuring in unison, but Clancy's simple storytelling prevents any confusion along the way. ”

“It is a very nice Sci-fi (kind of) book, it has a lot of action and spying in the book. It is about Russians and Americans fight to be able to build their lazers to protect their country but they have to get information by using a spy.......the code name of the American spy is "The Cardinal of the Kremlin".”

“I read this book based on a recommendation from a college professor who taught a course on "Intelligence and National Security." He worked in the "Intelligence" field and indicated that this is a good book to read to get an idea of what "spy games" are like. This is the first Clancy book I've read, although I did not realize when I picked it up that it is in the middle of the John Clark/Jack Ryan series. I don't think you need to read them in order, although it may be a good idea because it would have been nice to know the reoccurring characters better. There were several ties to "The Hunt for Red October," and while I'm familiar with the plot from seeing the movie several years ago, I am not sure I picked up on everything. Still, all in all, this was an excellent read. The story kept me engaged (which is saying something for such a long book), and oddly enough I found myself rooting for several different sides. I look forward to reading more books in the series and by Clancy in general.”
