Sarah Clark is seduced by her teacher, Daniel Carr, when she is fourteen years old. When his wife discovers the affair the family leave the area. Sarah is devestated and her life falls apart. Her parents are portrayed as unsympathetic and insensitive to her needs. She embarks on a torrid career of one night stands with as many repulsive men as well as friends, friends husbands, pretty much anyone who is available. Her best friend, Jamie, stands by her regardless of what she does to him or to herself, helping her get back on her feet when she is in trouble, and available for her no matter what she does to him. She also has an ongoing affair with Jack, boyfriend and then husband of a female acquaintance. Daniel Carr comes back into her life, still infatuated by Sarah and having left his wife. She moves in with him and they dive headlong into a torrid, uncontrolled affair, recognizing and embracing their mutual need for a sexually violent relationship. Scattered throughout the plot are detailed literary allusions, both sharing a deep love of literature. She reappears in Jamies life a year later. Though she had tried to contact him earlier Jamie's wife, family and staff had blocked all messages. Jamie has sex with her in his office, and afterwards is deeply shamed at the thought of hurting her, with terrble consequences. The novel ends with Sarah reaffirming the importance of doing what you want with your life.
