This might be the most uneven book I could ever give five stars to. It was very gothic, but James wanted it to be in the "new American" style, so reading it I got the sense that the book has not really discovered its own identity yet. But then I read the last chapter, and said to myself, "This...

    I like Henry James and have read this before. I found in this reading that the most interesting thing is how James develops the American character and the French young lady who is seeking a fortune. The American character ultimately ends up being a "good guy" and not self seeking even though he is also shallow. Fascinating character.
