Some of the prose is just flat-out beautifull. This is a book I looked forward to re-reading while I was reading it. ”

Yes | No“ I am going to paste in this review first ; "The Bone People has been praised for its story and for the way it is written, which is said to reflect the intonation and style of the Maori language. The story is, in fact, filled with allusions to the Maori culture and many of the challenges that the Maori people face, those common struggles caused by the colonization of an indigenous people. At the same time, however, the problems that are presented in this story have universal relevance. The story attempts to answer questions about how one heals deep-seated, emotional pain, how one becomes true to oneself, and how one finds love."
I read this because I'm going to New Zealand and wanted to read something about the Maori culture. I believe I did. The Maori language is used throughout and I found myself wanting to know what certain passages meant and so I would look it up, I found the internet has excellent Maori language translations. But as the review states, this is a strange and unique love story, three damaged souls that find each other in their pain and realize a very unique love. Very difficult at times to read, not only for the subject matter, but due to the writing style. I'm glad I pushed on, it is very poetic and visual, and strangely endearing. ”
“Although I had trouble following the Author's writing style the story did drag you in nearly against your will. She did have a way of giving you a sucker punch to the gut more than once in the weaving of this tale. ”

She often uses a stream of consciousness style, and the subject matter is brutal and quite difficult to read at times. The ending is a little too pat, but still a very interesting read. Not a light summer fluff book, by any means. Great for a serious book club.”

Won the Booker, and put NZ on the literary world map.”
