It is about a Ute Indian boy who was betrayed by his own people and the white people. He left his reservation after Red found out he could become a bronc rider. He had to win and loss rides based on bets. He's been through thick and thin when he finally realized he should return to his lands and start over. Coming from the same ethnic background along with having family members as cowboys, I felt a close connection.
I read this book when I was in junior high. Therefore, I would love to introduce this book to junior high students. Do a journal entry on it for each student and make some personal connections. Character map, in my opinion, to make with this book. The characters all have different characteristics and teachings about life. This book does have alot of teachings and being minority, American Indian, this book can definitely be a great book for adolescences to read. ”
“One of the few books school made me read that I was impressed by (at the time).
Very dark. Leaves you feeling kind of empty.”
“Teach it too.”

i admit that this book was very slow at the beginning but it took off very quick. i love this boook and i havent even gotten to the end. this book just teaches you many things. like i would've never thought, "why try and plant cotton here? if it was ment to grow it will grow here." this kid is chocked full of wisdom! even if it is just the old way.”
“It’s about a young Ute boy who lives in “the old way” and has a pet bear, he is taken to a school where he has to give up the bear and gets teased a lot, becomes a bronco rider, almost dies, goes back to the reservation and goes back to “the old way.” Student reviewer: Alyssa”

This is a great novel to show how cultures conflict. (I wish there were some happy medium: every culture keeps its roots but comes together to form a new culture.)”
