I really like this book! It was a very different narrative style, in that it is told from the perspective of a film that Steve (the main character) wants to make about his experiences about his trial. He also had chapters that are written like diary entries that he composes about his trial...

2 and 1/2.

Maybe it's just personal opinion, but I don't think a book should be written like a play if it's not a play. And, um, this isn't a play, right? Like, no one performs this? Meh. The style really bothered me.

Also, I have never felt such an incredible disconnect with...

This is a great read for young men in middle and high school. It's an eye opener. Writing from the perspective of the 16 year-old was a great choice.

I like the whole idea of it being a scrip and not a story

"Monster" that's what they called him for being accused of participating in a murder of a store clerk. The book expresses the feelings of a young man going through court trials for a murder he says he had nothing to do with, he's just hoping everybody else sees it that way too.

This book is about a 16 year-old African American named Steve Harmon who lives in Harlem, New York. He is put into a situation where he is put on trial for murder and the prosecuters call him "monster." He is accused of being involved in a robbery that led to the death of the owner of a drugstore. They suspect him as being the lookout for his friend during the robbery. Now, he is on trial to find out if he is guilty or not. Is he a murderer? or was he at the wrong place at the wrong time? That is the question left up to the jury in the court room.

This book is about Steve Harmon and it is in play format. It tells of Steve's trial and how he copes. He must first deal with racism which is a main part of the story. So he must now hope for proper evidence. Will his race keep him from freedom? Or will the jury see through the facade?
