Emma Jean Lazarus Fell Out of a Tree

Emma Jean Lazarus Fell Out of a Tree

by Lauren Tarshis

Emma-Jean Lazarus is a lovable oddball who thinks she can use logic to solve the “messy” everyday problems of her seventh-grade peers. It’s easy—she just follows the example of her late father, a brilliant mathematician. Of course, the more Emma-Jean gets involved, the messier her own life gets. Suddenly she’s no longer the person standing on the outside of all social interactions. But perhaps... (read more)

Written very well from the middle school student perspective and really conveyed the trials and tribulations commonly associated with this age group.

This book took me by surprise. I thought, here we go again with a book that will preach to young readers, but it was not like that. Our girl Emma Jean is spunky, has her own mind and tries to help those around her solve some of the biggest problems facing them in middle school. You will get a kick out of Emma Jean Lazarus Fell Out of a Tree.

    This book was okay.

I didn't really find Emma Jean to be an appealing character. She was mostly improbable. She is a sixth grader with the mind of a fifty-year-old man. I found her unnecessary meddling a bit annoying.

Unless you are really into YA lit., this one you can pass.

Pretty good overall story. Nicely fleshed out relationships, non-nuclear family (dad has passed on), clearly written, well-defined characters, especially Emma Jean. The story reminded me of a child's version of Austen's Sense and Sensibility.

Emma-Jean is not your average 7th grader. She's noticeably different than her peers, so much so that certain adults at her school go out of their way to look out for her so that other students don't cause her any trouble. She actually reminds me a little of a friend of mine who has Asperger Syndrome, though the book never says she has any disability. This isn't one of those books that makes you laugh out loud and cry, but it does stand out in my mind as a great book to read aloud with middle readers. Emma-Jean is unique and learns a thing or two about herself by the end of the book. She tries her best to help others, and that doesn't always work out quite as she had imagined. This book may actually help readers see the needy human side of people who are not like the rest, you know, the ones who get made fun of constantly in school. It shows that although Emma-Jean is a little weird, she too needs social acceptance to help her grow, even if she herself denies it.
