“Emma-Jean is not your average 7th grader. She's noticeably different than her peers, so much so that certain adults at her school go out of their way to look out for her so that other students don't cause her any trouble. She actually reminds me a little of a friend of mine who has Asperger Syndrome, though the book never says she has any disability. This isn't one of those books that makes you laugh out loud and cry, but it does stand out in my mind as a great book to read aloud with middle readers. Emma-Jean is unique and learns a thing or two about herself by the end of the book. She tries her best to help others, and that doesn't always work out quite as she had imagined. This book may actually help readers see the needy human side of people who are not like the rest, you know, the ones who get made fun of constantly in school. It shows that although Emma-Jean is a little weird, she too needs social acceptance to help her grow, even if she herself denies it.”
