Didn’t Like It

I've never been a Mailer fan, and this just goes down as another one of his poorly written stories in my opinion. I got no real feeling from the fight, or Ali's majesty and wit. I'd rather watch the Will Smith film in all honesty.

hero ali. it only helped that it was written by mailer.
both ali and mailer are egoists, the kind that one cannot hate; anyway modesty is an overrated virtue.

The story of the greatest boxing match of all time, told in a brilliant way by someone who saw it up, close and personal

Actually originally read this serialized in Playboy or Esquire, I think, before the book was published. Standard Mailer. Great coverage of a great fight. The one time I saw Mailer in person he was reading an Esquire piece he'd written about the Liston-Patterson fight. It was called "20,000 words a minute," and, while I had already read it in the magazine, it was great to hear Mailer read it and comment on the process of writing it.

It has been years since I've read any Mailer. I missed something, not reading him. This is brilliant!

It's a terrible shame that we had to lose such a gifted writer. The Fight provided me with a meaningful template on which a boxing book could be written. I don't know if I ever would have completed my first novel had I not read this book.
