How could a woman give up her two sons for adoption and then watch them as they grow up? How could she manage to raise another child who might even fit into the same...” see full review » see other reviews » |

I understand her rhythms, I guess I am trying to say. Unfortunately, as wonderful as she is, she is just slightly unsuccessful in most of her writing. This novel is no exception. Much of it is beaurifully written but I'd have to say that the contrivances necessary to pull the characters together are a bit heavy. They topple the good things that Patchett does by creating a family that comes together in unusual ways. And all of the kids, even the uneven Sullivan, are a little too good. Finally, what is it with the word "fishes?" "Fish" is the plural of "fishes." Why misuse this word about a hundred times?”

“The book begins with a very slow pace -- taking 39 pages to introduce all the characters and moving through only a couple of hours in time. But it is worth taking the time to get to know these people. I like the patience Ann Patchet has in letting us get acquainted with everyone – and when we get into the action and emotional scenes we have a real sense for how each character is feeling because we know them so well.
The entire book only moves us through a day and a half, until the last chapter which catapults us forward about four years, which I found rather jarring. I felt deprived of ever really getting to know Tennessee -- but isn't that how Tip and Terry felt?
After reading this book it is easy to see why every book that Ann Patchett has written has won awards.”
