Ben Wolf a Sr. in high school discovers he has one year to live when he went to the doctor for his one year Cross Country check up. He decides that he isn't going to tell anyone that he is dying, and he isn't going to get treatment for it. So, his doctor insists that he gets a therapist. After all this, he decides he isn't going out for cross country and is going to do footbal, with his brother, the star quarterback of the school. That might be the best decision of his short life because he gets a joint scholorship to attend Boise State University with his brother, as long as they play football. In the end, it is too difficlut for Ben to hold in this secret, so he starts to tell his friends and family that he is dying. He looses the love of his life after telling everyone he is dying because she thinks it is too much to handle. Ben learns a lot about hi self in his last year of life.

  • Dallas Suzuki: shes very athletic and is very hard to become friends with. she is a jock, Dallas is Ben's crush. She plays volleyball.
  • Cody Wolf: Ben's brother. He is the starting QB and Ben's younger brother.
  • Rudy McCoy: The town alcoholic
  • Mr. Lambeer: Ben's teacher, who hates him because he always interrupts his teaching to talk about Malcolm X. He is not a main character.
  • Joe Henry: A little boy who likes to play catch with Ben
  • Marla: Marla is Ben's therapist, she sets goals with Ben and tries to achieve them.
  • Mr. Cowans: Sooner Cowans' father
  • Hey-Soos: He is Ben's therapist in his dreams and who he confides in. He looks like Jesus and has the same sounding name but he does not represent Jesus.
  • Doc Wagner: Doc Wagner was Ben's doctor. He was the one who found Ben's blood disease, and promised to tell no one about it. He is not a main character.
  • Glover: One of the football players on Ben and Cody Wolf's team
  • Dolven: One of the football players on Ben and Cody Wolf's team
  • sooner: a football player on Ben and Cody's team. He is very aggressive and likes to push around many of the younger players. His father was on the football team when he was in school, and pushes Sooner a lot. In the middle of the book, his dad breaks his shoulder and he is out for some important games
