JANUARY's BOOK:
Smilla's Sense of Snow by Peter Hoeg.

DESCRIPTION:
The title of this quiet, absorbing suspense novel by a Danish author only suggests the intriguing story it tells. After young Isaiah Christiansen falls from a snow-covered roof in present-day Copenhagen, something about his lone rooftop tracks--and the fact that the boy had a fear of heights--obsesses Smilla Qaavigaaq Jaspersen, a woman who had befriended him. Smilla is 37, unmarried, and, like Isaiah, part of Denmark's small Eskimo/Greenlander community. She is also a minor Danish authority on the properties and classification of ice. Her search for what had frightened the boy leads her to uncover information about his father's mysterious death on a secret expedition to Greenland, a mission funded by a powerful Danish corporation involved in a strange conspiracy stretching back to WW II. As related in Smilla's sober, no-nonsense narration, the plot acquires credibility even as its details become more bizarre.

50 Book Challenge! 4720 books / 4694 members / 31205 posts Welcome to the 50-Book Challenge! We are not listless. In fact, we love lists ...

A list of the books we've been looking forward to, for example, can be found by following this link:

http://astore.amazon.com/allencotrip-20

Our challenge is to read 50 books in one year. OR ... establish a goal for yourself more or less, it's up to you, just because we say 50 books doesn't mean that has to be your goal too.

To join, all you need to do is start a thread, WITH YOUR NAME IN THE SUBJECT OF YOUR ORIGINAL POST, and log your books (with title and author, please.) Reviews are always welcome as well. It is a very good idea to bookmark your post (when in your post, add it to your internet browser's favorites)for quick access for future updates. Things move quickly around here.

If you haven't been keeping track of the books you've read, start when you join.

I enjoy reading your lists, and my TBR pile has grown as a result and I've read books I wouldn't have otherwise (The Hunger Games, I'm talking to you ...)

It doesn't have to be all lists all the time, though ... People enjoy it when you comment on their lists as well, so when you update your list ... take a minute and browse around. You never know what you might find. (Water For Elephants, I'm talking to you.)

The books we loved in 2008 can be found by following the Amazon link below

I survey the group each year starting in mid-December, until about mid-January then compile the lists and post the results. I look forward to this year's lists, now that the Twilight fervor has died down.

Thanks for being here and have fun. If you have any suggestions or questions, feel free to contact me.

Books that work well for Reading Groups/Book Clubs 72 books / 229 members / 252 posts Because I love to read, a few years ago I started a neighborhood book club. What books have worked well for your reading group? Which sparked a good discussion? (Sometimes a not-so-good book can make for dynamite interaction around the table). Which books would you recommend for a reading group--and why?

Now--I know all you authors out there will be tempted to add your books to our shelf, but our shelf is for books that have been read by and worked well for reading groups. Resist the urge for self-promotion, please, and I'll try to do the same. :-) (Disclaimer: My club has read one of my books, but that was a special occasion.) Happy reading! (And if you're not in a book club, feel free to join us anyway!)
Book Loving Friends (BLF) 65 books / 139 members / 71 posts I honestly think that people need help all the time - meaning- tying a shoe, grabbing someone before they get hit by a car, a rose to a very sad lookin woman. It sounds silly, but if we could get something like this started between us - first by sending cards with notes or whatever, then by Christmas we send cards a note and a gift. This does not have to be a huge investiment $10 is a lot! But that once a month would work well. So, que up

BabeCake Reading 754 books / 186 members / 1854 posts BabeCake Reading is a general reading group that was originally intended as an adjunct to the Yahoo general reading group Babecakes. We’re here to discuss any book or reading material. All Book-a-holics are welcome. If you are not a member of the Yahoo Babecakes group, please feel free to apply for membership at groups.yahoo.com/group/Babecakes and PLEASE mention your age. Unlike this Shelfari group, the Yahoo group does have a minimum age requirement (although very little to no “adult” type of discussion actually happens).

You do not have to be a member of the Yahoo group to be a member of the Shelfari group and vice versa. To date, the Yahoo group seems to be the more verbose of the two groups but the Shelfari group has the advantage of the wonderful shelves.

Feel free to add to the shelves especially if you are discussing a particular book. It makes it SO much easier for interested members to get more information on the book that you mention.

Also feel free to open up a discussion whenever you wish to. If it is Off Topic (not about reading or writing) please put “OT” in your discussion topic title. Administrators, though, do reserve the right to erase topics that are a bit too much off of the topic or are offensive to most other members in our group.

BTW: Opening up a discussion on both the Babecakes and the BabeCake Reading groups will not be considered cross-posting and are welcome. In fact, for those of you who are on both groups, please feel free to cut and paste discussions (but not the responses please) from one group to the other. We administrators don’t always remember to do this and need the help.

Paranormal Mystery 645 books / 515 members / 4781 posts This is a group for people who enjoy the sub-/cross-genre of paranormal mystery.
This is not to be confused with either paranormal romance or urban fantasy.
It can, though, overlap with several other sub-genres.

Please feel free to add to the group shelves at any time as long as the books added can be considered a paranormal mystery.

Also please feel free to post about books outside of this genre but carefully title the subject as "OT" (Off Topic).

P.S. Authors of books that fit this category are welcome to introduce their books here.

Better than Starbucks… if you like good coffee, great books, sharp wit, and people who read 1626 books / 1957 members / 28564 posts Better than Starbucks… if you like good coffee, great books, sharp wit, and people who read
Shakespeare, Dickens, Twain, Marquez, Morrison, Joyce, Faulkner, Cather, Kingsolver and a few hundred other really delicious writers, not to impress strangers, but because they love a good read, then please join us.

We are not a private group, but the administrators will not resist the urge to delete boring and stupid comments. By the same token, personal attacks on young, slow or otherwise disadvantaged players will not be tolerated.

Generally, be nice to other members, but spare not public figures, pop lit superstars, big box stores, politicians and religious leaders. Focus more energy on what is good and even what is great, but feel free to throw a stone when the occasion calls for it.

To steal a phrase: we want to have serious intellectual discussions, but at the same time we want the heat to generate light, not fire....

Welcome!

For most people, what is so painful about reading is that you read something and you don't have anybody to share it with.
In part what the book club opens up is that people can read a book and then have someone else to talk about it with. Then they see that a book can lead to the pleasure of conversation, that the solitary act of reading can actually be a part of the path to communion and community.”
