The Darkest Child is a powerful debut from Delores Phillips; one so strong, I think she should earn a nomination for "rookie author of the year," if such a category in literature exists. It is a harrowing saga set in the late 1950's in rural Georgia and narrated by a teenaged Tangy Mae Quinn....

Extraordinary! I loved this book! Page turner, couldn't put it down. Screams for a sequel where the mother gets hit by a train!

I love reading books where the characters show a deep spirit to survive. So many time it would have been easy for the main character to give up and become less that what she was destined to be. something in her keept her from becoming her environment.

Haunting! Riveting! A real page turner. Delores Phillips tells a compelling, frightening and disturbing story, that breaks your heart and exhausts you all at the same time. Ms. Phillips' writing style is visual, descriptive and extremely engaging. I felt as if I knew each of her characters personally.

A harrowing story the heroine's survival of multiple childhood traumas, the majority of which are inflicted by her mother. Set in rural Georgia in 1958, it also explores the multiple traumas inflicted by racism. The characters are so well written that they stay with you for a long time after you've finished the book.

I read this book a while ago but the story has stayed with me because it is filled with heart-wrenching pain and misery. The protaganist, Tangy Mae, is a smart girl born into a dysfunctional family in the Jim Crow south. Her mother has a house full of children by different men and can barely provide for them. She is also abusive and erratic and prizes her sons above her daughters which isn't saying much seeing as she treats all the children with measured disdain. My one problem with the book is that we never find out what is wrong with the mother or why she is so mean to her children.

I rooted for Tangy Mae throughout the whole book and had hoped that the author would write a sequel showing us how she turned out after her horrible childhood.

The characters in this piece are so surreal. Phillips works with mental patients so I asked her if the personalities of her characters in "The Darkest Child" stemmed from some of her patients. Her response was no. She said she is writing a sequel to this. I'm anxious to read about the continuing life of Rozelle. This is an outstanding book.
