Freeda and Winnalee Malone arrive in town with no place to stay. They meet Verdella who offers her deceased mother-in-law's house to them. Verdella introduces her niece Evelyn "Button," to Winnalee, and they quickly become best friends. winnalee is a free spirited nine year old who carries around an urn with her mother's ashes in it. Button is a fearful nine year old who bites the inside of her cheek when she's nervous. Button's parents don't show their affection, but her Aunt Verdella and Uncle Rudy do. Freeda helps soften up Jewel and Reece and gives make-overs to Jewel and Verdella. Eventually, secrets are revealed and things change.
