I typically enjoy books by Preston/Child but this one seemed different. I simply could not get into this book. With over 700 pages long it became painfully obvious that this was going to be excruciatingly long and detailed. When the storyline didn't seem to pick up or develop after 100 pages, I...

This series is becoming like a mystery soap opera - wild concepts, character swings, girls with nice breasts (that's a direct quote!), opera, the Devil - but it is still darn enthralling. I hope the authors got some good travel out of this novel with the lovely settings from Italy. The convoluted mystery involving a pact with the Devil and world's most fabulous violin is very Victorian and the authors play up this link with a character straight out of a Wilkie Collins story.

When a book begins with a murder, it usually gets you involved from the first page. That didn't happen for me with Brimstone. It lacked something and I thought it was too dry. I don't even think I'll come back to it for another go.

EEP! Holy cow! I don't understand why people say this isn't as good as the previous books. I thought it was AMAZING! It literally had so many twists that I couldn't even begin to guess where it was heading. Oh, and we get background on Pendergast? Awesome. It was thrilling, kept me guessing, made me laugh, and unfortunately sob like a baby near the end. Awesome book.

Finally finished Brimstone. Once again these authors jump right to the action in what seems a stellar plot. Then the read bogs down with information overload and descriptive passages, IMHO - and I'm a huge Pendergast fan. It was nice that the rogue agent had a romantic interest in this book - however slight. The novel ended with a cliffhanger, another plus. But come on . . . we know Pendergast isn't dead. LOL. D'Agosta, our favorite beat cop, carried his weight throughout. In fact, Vincent flexed muscles we'd not seen before. But I didn't really get the sidebar re: Reverend Buck. Perhaps a lead into another novel?

The book starts off with a maid discovering the body of her employer from very unusual death - burned from the inside, with a hoofprint burned into the floor and the stinch of sulfur in the air. This death is connected with a group of men going back years to college in Italy, and superhero agent Pendergast connects the dots with his usual understated style. I found myself having trouble with this chapter in the Pendergast saga. For some reason I couldn't totally suspend my disbelief and go with the story. Our FBI agent had too many Batman moments of solutions conjured out of the air. We do see D'Agosta and a few other characters from previous books. Its quite interesting to hear what happened in their lives since last we met them. Also, I guess I need to review the book Cabinet of Curiousities and see if Constance is mentioned in it. Her reveal is still very mysterious to me. However, with that being said, once I got to the end of the story I was captivated. I don't think the author intended the audience to NOT figure out the events at the end, but the ending of this book propelled me to the next book in the series, Dance of Death, to see what happens next.

This book is my least favorite of the Pendergast series so far. While I learn much more about Pendergast, and Lieutenant D'Agosta is back, the story just didn't grab me as much as the previous books. There is a bit of a cliff hanger, however...
