Of all the folks in the mountain shacks, the Casteels were the lowest -- the scum of the hills. Characters/People edit see section history

  • Heaven: The main character. She's beautiful, smart, and kind. The oldest child in the family. Everyone walks all over her, but she does her best to hold the family together.
  • Tom: Heaven's half-brother, the next in line. He's just as smart and kind as Heaven. Tries hard to be the man of the family.
  • Fanny: Heaven's half-sister, the next daughter in the family. She's beautiful, but in a very sexual way. She's also very dumb, and selfish. I think she loves Heaven, but is also very jealous of her.
  • Keith: Heaven's half-brother, next in line. He's very quiet, takes after the grandfather. He's a shadow to the youngest sister.
  • Jane (or Our Jane): The youngest child, Heaven's baby half-sister. Keith follows her around like a puppy dog. She's bright, funny, a sweet little girl who just wants to play and be a child, but is also very ill.
  • Luke Casteel: Heaven's good-for-nothing father who pretty much abandons the family for booze and the whore-house. His list of transgressions gets worse and worse as the story goes on...
  • Sarah Casteel: Heaven's step-mother. She's overworked, overtired, and unloved by her husband. He shows up in time to make another child, and leave again. She takes it out on the kids, particularly Heaven because Sarah knows that she can never replace Heaven's mother in Luke's eyes.
  • Logan Stonewall: Heaven's almost-boyfriend. He's the big-man-on-campus, and his father is a wealthy pharmacist. Logan is nice to Heaven and it's love at first sight. He knows that Heaven is ashamed of her family and where she lives, but he won't let her talk that way.
  • Grandpa: Granny's husband. he's a very quite man who just rocks in a chair and whittles all day.
  • Kitty Dennison: Kitty is the woman who adopts Heaven. She is a neurotic woman who has mother issues of her own. She is sexually suggestive and uses her body to get her way with her husband.
  • Granny: Grandpa's wife. she is known to sit in the rocking chair beside her husband and talk.
