"Because I could not stop for Death, he kindly stopped for me; The carriage held but just ourselves and Immortality." ("The Chariot" - my favorite poem)This is poetry at its finest! Also, you might want to try listening to Berkeley composer John Adams' 1980 composition "Harmonium" wherein he includes this Dickinson poem, plus John Donne's "Negative Love," both set to minimalist music. Highly recommended!

Didn’t Like It

I like Emily Dickinson’s poetry, but her preoccupation with death and immortality make me feel oddly ill at ease.

Although Dickinson often used slant rhyme (…From tankards scooped in pearl… Yield such an alcohol!), when I first read her poetry I did not notice the lack of exact rhyme. What I did notice is that she wrote a huge number of poems.

My favorite poem by Dickinson was called “Parting”: “My life closed twice before its close; It yet remains to...
