This is a great collection of Lethem's early stories published in science fiction magazines.

The Happy Man: A creepy sci-fi / horror story that is hard to shake off even if the ending is predictable.

Vanilla Dunk: Probally the best story in the collection. In the future basketball players wear exoskeletons that give them the abilities of legendary players. An obnoxious white guy draws the Jordan skills leading to conflict with the rest of his team. This shows off Lethem's abilities as a satirist.

Light and The Sufferer: A crime story with a sci-fi twist that gives it more poignancy than it might have had otherwise.

Forever, Said the Duck: A story about virtual avetars interacting. Comes off more as a gimmick than a story but it's not completyely uninteresting.

Five Fucks: This is the great mindfuck story of the collection. To say anymore would give things away.

Hardened Criminals: This one is pretty creepy as well. A man gets locked up in a prison made completely of hardened bodies of other past criminals including his own father who he hasn't seen sincve he was six.

Sleepy People: A man falls asleep on a woman's doorstep and she takes him into her home with weirdness following.

An incredible collection showcasing some of Lethem's more speculative short fiction. Stories like the Happy Man, Light and Sufferer, and the Hardened Criminals are going to be with me for a while. And Vanilla Dunk was way more fun than a story about basketball set in the future has any right to be. Honestly, reading it made me wish Lethem would let himself go and write a new SF novel.
